A Heart Adrift: A Novel | Laura Frantz
3 posts | 4 read
It is 1755, and the threat of war with France looms over colonial York, Virginia. Chocolatier Esmée Shaw is fighting her own battle of the heart. Having reached her twenty-eighth birthday, she is reconciled to life alone after a decade-old failed love affair from which she's never quite recovered. But she longs to find something worthwhile to do with her life. Captain Henri Lennox has returned to port after a lengthy absence, intent on completing the lighthouse in the dangerous Chesapeake Bay, a dream he once shared with Esmée. But when the colonial government asks him to lead a secret naval expedition against the French, his future is plunged into uncertainty. Will a war and a cache of regrets keep them apart, or can their shared vision and dedication to the colonial cause heal the wounds of the past? Bestselling and award-winning author Laura Frantz whisks you away to a time fraught with peril--on the sea and in the heart--in this redemptive, romantic story.

I'd heard a lot of praise for this book, which is why I decided to listen to the audiobook. At first the book really grabbed my attention and kept me listening, but then we started getting into the middle of it and my interest started going away. I never got invested into the love story. Toward the end of the book, I found I didn't care about the characters like I usually would. It got to the point where I was just trying to finish it.

What a lovely romance story; throw in chocolate, a lady light keeper, a sea captain, treasure and political intrigue and you have the makings of a great story. Esmee was such a strong woman. She was always helping those less fortunate. The story ended way too soon!

I received this book from the publisher for my honest review.

I do so love second chance romance and Esmee and Henri have it down perfectly in 1755 Virginia. Laura Frantz has a beautifully lyrical way of writing that transports the reader to the heart of York, Virginia. The story is infused with such rich history ranging from building a lighthouse operated by a woman to delicious details involved in chocolate making during the colonial times.
I received the book from the publisher and opinions are my own.
