This is my Christmas gift to myself- reliving a bit of my childhood with brand-new books set in Lackey‘s Valdemar world. This kicks of a new series about the founding of Valdemar. Duke Kordas inherited more than his duchy and a talent for horse-breeding, but also a Plan to save his people from the endless cruelty of the Emperor. And finally the pieces fit for them to enact it! Spies, adventure, magic and a love of animals blends well here!

GondorGirl I will forever buy and read every Valdemar book Misty writes. She was my gateway into fantasy as a tween. 🥰 2y
TorieStorieS @GondorGirl I feel absolutely the same! Years may go by as an adult between me picking up one of her books, but each time I do, it‘s just like coming home!🥰🥰🥰 2y

I know she has said some disappointing things about trans characters of late, but I loved Valdemar as a child, and she was one of the first genre authors I read that included LGBTQ characters (though there was a lot of trauma there), so I just had to read this book. It took me back, and there were queer characters who didn‘t have trauma, and I thought it was pretty great. Hopefully she will grow from the controversy and not double down.

The origin story of the kingdom of Valdemar. I like the tribute to P.G. Wodehouse‘s 🐖 Empress of Blandings. And Tolkien, with the Brandywine stream

I‘m not sure what distinguishes those with a Gift from mages though. She tends to show and then tell as well.

humouress I wonder why there‘s such a rush to implement the plan that has been generations in making just because they finally found a way to make it work? And why things aren‘t more ready to go? *sigh* And again with the italics ... (edited) 4y
