Secret Identity
Secret Identity: A Novel | Alex Segura
13 posts | 10 read | 1 reading | 9 to read
From Anthony Award-winning writer Alex Segura comes Secret Identity, a rollicking literary mystery set in the world of comic books. Its 1975 and the comic book industry is struggling, but Carmen Valdez doesnt care. Shes an assistant at Triumph Comics, which doesnt have the creative zeal of Marvel nor the buttoned-up efficiency of DC, but it doesnt matter. Carmen is tantalizingly close to fulfilling her dream of writing a superhero book. That dream is nearly a reality when one of the Triumph writers enlists her help to create a new character, which they call The Lethal Lynx, Triumph's first female hero. But her colleague is acting strangely and asking to keep her involvement a secret. And then hes found dead, with all of their scripts turned into the publisher without her name. Carmen is desperate to piece together what happened to him, to hang on to her piece of the Lynx, which turns out to be a runaway hit. But thats complicated by a surprise visitor from her home in Miami, a tenacious cop who is piecing everything together too quickly for Carmen, and the tangled web of secrets and resentments among the passionate eccentrics who write comics for a living. Alex Segura uses his expertise as a comics creator as well as his unabashed love of noir fiction to create a truly one-of-a-kind novel--hard-edged and bright-eyed, gritty and dangerous, and utterly absorbing.

Set in 1970s New York, this book tells the story of a young woman who moves from Florida to NYC to work in the comics industry. It‘s not easy to break in as a woman however & then a betrayal by a friend, found murdered shortly after, leaves her reeling. This is a fun mystery, particularly for fans of comics, that dives deep into the world of comics, the pressures, the rivalries, the creative process. An entertaining read.

Carmen wants to write comics but is shut out by the misogyny of the industry teaming up with a coworker who might help her get published. When he is murdered without giving her credit for their blockbuster character, she must solve his murder to save her own skin and to maybe live to write more books. Definitely best for regular comics readers. Full review at http://booknaround.blogspot.com/2023/12/review-secret-identity-by-alex-segura.ht...

I bought this for my husband last year for Christmas and forgot so I bought it for him this year too. So I guess I‘ll read a copy and see which of our boys will get it in his stocking instead. 🤣

Themes: Comic Books, 1970‘s NYC, Women Kicking Butt and Taking Names

This was a solid read, I really enjoyed it from start to finish 👍 I could definitely see it as a Netflix series, for some reason I got major Daredevil vibes while reading it lol The audio book was great too! The voice was perfect for Carmen and the rest of the cast.

#Two4Tuesday

1. That‘s a good question! I‘ll go with the tagged book—can‘t go wrong with a mystery set in the world of comic books, can you? Speaking of comics, the thing I‘m MOST excited about reading this spring is Saga. Love that it‘s back!

2. For sure—and I‘ll listen to pretty much anything while I‘m reading.

TheSpineView Thanks for playing! Happy Tuesday! 3y

The book started a little slow for me, but I am glad I stuck with this one. The back half of this book is very intriguing and fast paced when it is all said and done. It had a noir feel throughout the writing, and it completely worked for this particular book. Very fun book with lots of twists and turns.

A thoroughly engaging mystery set in the 1970s comic world. I was intrigued by the mystery, invested in Carmen, and loved the rich details about comic publishing. The actual Lynx comics interspersed throughout were an added bonus that really added to the fun of reading this.
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the ARC in return for my honest review.

This mystery about a female comic book writer in the 1970s was a mixed bag, but appreciated for being a bit different. Read my full review here: https://debbybrauer.org/#secret-identity

Yaaaaaaasssss! Loved this wonderful mystery novel with a comic book theme. The audiobook was great! And, the “comic book excerpts” (which in the print version are illustrated) played like an old fashioned radio drama.
