The Midnight Lock
The Midnight Lock | Jeffery Deaver
6 posts | 6 read | 3 to read
The "master of ticking-bomb suspense" (People) Jeffery Deaver delivers the latest thriller featuring his beloved protagonists Lincoln Rhyme and Amelia Sachs as they search for a criminal whose fascination with breaking locks terrorizes New York City. A woman awakes in the morning to find that someone has picked her apartment's supposedly impregnable door lock and rearranged personal items, even sitting beside her while she slept. The intrusion, the police learn, is a message to the entire city of carnage to come. Lincoln Rhyme and Amelia Sachs are brought in to investigate and soon learn that the sociopathic intruder, who calls himself "the Locksmith," can break through any lock or security system ever devised. With more victims on the horizon, Rhyme, Sachs and their stable of associates must follow the evidence to the man's lair... and discover his true mission. Their hunt is interrupted when an internal investigation in the police force uncovers what seems to be a crucial mistake in one of Rhyme's previous cases. He's fired as a consultant for the NYPD and must risk jail if he investigates the Locksmith case in secret. The Midnight Lock is a roller-coaster read that takes place over just a few days' time, features surprise after surprise and offers a fascinating look at the esoteric world of lockpicking.

I listened to this Lincoln Rhyme book. There were actually 3 story lines going that converged into 2 about 3/4 of the way thru. Lincoln Rhyme botches a case according to the defense of a crime boss, who ends up getting off for a murder. He is then told he could no longer consult for the NYPD. There's also someone breaking into apartments and leaving signs that he/she was there while the owner was asleep in bed. Amelia is on the case and ⬇️

MonicaLoves2Read evidence for Lincoln though he is fired from NYPD. Then there is someone after the owner of a newspaper. How do all of these story lines come together. Well, it's Jeffery Deaver, one of the best mystery suspense writers of our time. If you have never read the Lincoln Rhyme series, I don't know how you have missed it. Go to your local library and grab Jeffery Deaver's books. You can thank me later.

I really enjoyed this crime novel. The hero was quite distinctive and it was good to see more disabled characters in fiction.

KathyWheeler In the last Lincoln Rhyme novel I read, I decided I really didn‘t like Lincoln at all. He was just mean to people for absolutely no reason — including Amelia. And mean in ways that amounted to abuse. I haven‘t read any since. I think that book was The Burning Wire. I might read this to see if I still feel that way. (edited) 1y
johncadams @KathyWheeler I haven't read that one. I am happy to report that Lincoln's behaviour to his wife was very kind and pleasant in this novel, so it's good to see that he appears to have changed for the better. 1y
KathyWheeler @johncadams Thank you. I don‘t need him to be nice all the time — that would be unrealistic— but this was ridiculous. 1y

Lincoln Rhyme and Amelia Sachs have another outing in book 15 in this long running series.

A criminal, The Locksmith, is terrorising New York, and no locks seem to be able to keep him out as he breaks into people‘s houses and watches them while they sleep. Is this going to progress into a murder spree? Lincoln Rhyme seeks to hunt him down, but at the same time others are hunting Lincoln and trying to bring him down.

Andrew65 Overall this was a very good read and moved along well. Jeffrey Deaver certainly researched well how to break through locks, although at points I felt this got a bit too technical and slowed things down. As a result I struggled with the book a bit midway but it then picked up pace for me again as it got into the second half. 3y
Andrew65 Happy to recommend this book, with the slight caveat above, but always good to spend time with Lincoln and Amelia. Certainly some of the more intelligent crime fiction out there.

Thanks to #NetGalley, the author and the publishers for providing a copy of this book for me, for an an open and honest review. #TheMidnightLock
