A bit of history on the Brazilian slave trade. Average life expectancy was only eighteen. Unbelievable, even with the overall lower life expectancy back then.

AmyS "In the United States, where the primary slave crop was King Cotton, there was a financial incentive to keep slaves alive: they were the most valuable 'equipment' in the production process... In Brazil, however, the primary 'crops' were diamonds and gold. Sustaining the lives of slaves was secondary to getting as many of the precious stones and minerals out of the ground as humanly possible... 8y
AmyS "If slaves died in the mines, they were dumped and new slaves brought in. That is why the life expectancy of slaves in Brazil was so cruelly brief by comparison to the United States." 8y
Laalaleighh I've spent the past few minutes trying to form a comment for this but I just can't. It's just monstrous. 8y
BookishMarginalia 😳 I also know that Brazil was the last to abolish slavery, in the late 1880s, if I remember correctly... 8y
TheNextBook I'll just never understand how easily greed can make people completely disregard human life. 8y

This book was published in 2014. I wonder how Brazilians are feeling now that the World Cup is over and the Olympics are in progress.

An apparently longstanding joke in Brazil. I don't know much about Brazil but based on what I've read so far, its government does leave something to be desired.

Eyelit I shared your post with a non litsy Brazilian friend and she said there is corruption on all levels, but the people keep on dancing 8y
AmyS @Eyelit Well, at least there is dancing. 8y

Watching the Olympics and reading about how prep for the World Cup and the Olympics in Brazil has affected Brazilians: "No one in power is adapting to the new economic reality, in which growth has slowed dramatically...There is no recognition that prioritizing the games above all else has rendered every new 'white elephant' World Cup stadium a potent symbol of just how much people feel they are being left behind."

My interest in sports is limited to the Olympics. Every 4th summer or winter, I become a sports fan, glued to the TV watching all the different events, getting teary as I see athletes achieve lifelong dreams. And the second the Closing Ceremony ends, I go back to not caring about sports at all. So I only have one book that is kind of about sports. #booksandsports #augustphotochallenge #augustofpages

TheSpinecrackersBookClub I definitely do the same re the Olympics. I also do this during the soccer world cup. 8y
