'Brilliant.' Candice Carty-Williams 'This is a miraculous book.' Joe Dunthorne 'A curious, funny and deeply human story.' Emmy the Great Nick, a young illustrator, can't connect with people. Whether it's the barista down the street, his own family or Wren, an oncologist whose life becomes painfully tangled with his, Nick can't shake the feeling that there is some hidden realm of human interaction beyond his reach. He staggers through meaningless conversations and haunts lookalike, vacuous coffee shops in the hope that he will find it there. But it isn't until Nick learns to stop performing and speak about the things that really matter that the complex and colourful worlds of the people he meets are finally revealed to him. Illustrated in both colour and black-and-white in McPhail's instantly recognisable style, In is poignant, fresh and hilarious. McPhail transforms the graphic novel with a heart-wrenching compassion uncannily appropriate for our isolated times.

Bailedbailed

My first bail of the year. I‘m just so confused and not invested. I think this is intended as a parody, but I‘m not even feeling certain of that. Clearly I‘m not the right audience. I have 2 more titles picked out from my #AuldLangSpine list that I‘m excited about, but this is the last one I‘ll be reading this month. @SueK @monalyisha

Lindy The main character is feeling quite alienated. I can understand your not connecting with him, although this story did work for me. One of the small things I loved is all the visual jokes about coffee places. 2y
IndoorDame @Lindy the one thing I did love in the section I read was the description of the coffee shop with free coffee but a charge per page of your novel written there and free Wi-Fi but only one electric outlet so all the writers were pitted against each other 😆 2y
Lindy @IndoorDame I had forgotten that detail 😂 2y

Nick finds it hard to connect with people and move beyond the small-talk that he doesn‘t really master. And I felt for him as he tries to connect and felt his aloneness. But on the few occasions that he does connect, I got so happy for him.

I loved the black/ white illustrations and the occasional full color ones.

My heart is in pieces on the floor. I‘m not huge on graphic novels, but this is gorgeous and relatable. A young man attempts to make meaningful connections with strangers and later, his family. Sad but also funny. I usually don‘t check trigger warnings but I wish I had known some things going in. I don‘t want to spoil anything, so hidden in comments are the TWs. I think this struck me so deeply because I‘ve been going through similar situations.

Chelsea.Poole Trigger warnings: death of parent, cancer. 3y

An introverted, self-centred cartoonist struggles to make authentic connections with the people around him. This Scottish graphic novel is both funny and sad and I loved it.

At first I thought “ oh no another white dude creative type in NYC” book but it actually pokes fun of millennial angst and addresses how difficult it is to connect with other humans in this ironic late capitalist world. Gorgeous artwork

Beautiful book looking at the connections we make (and don't make). When he makes a connection the world turns to full colour.
