The Appalachian Trail
The Appalachian Trail: A Biography | Philip D'Anieri
4 posts | 5 read | 10 to read
The Appalachian Trail is America's most beloved trek, with millions of hikers setting foot on it every year. Yet few are aware of the fascinating backstory of the oddballs and obsessives who helped bring it to life over the past century.

Mehso-so

Okay. 💁🏼‍♂️ I'm honestly no longer sure what I wanted this book to be, so can't really assess whether it delivered. It's not that it tried to be too many things - it was concise in its treatment of various people involved in the development of the Appalachian Trail, you got a sense of who they were and how they contributed. Maybe I'm not cut out for straight history/short biographies when I'm unsure of my interest level in the subject matter? 1/

Robotswithpersonality 2/? I have varying success with memoirs so maybe that was another contributing factor. D'Anieri stated the facts, and even when the facts of a person's life were upsetting, overall the information recounted felt, not dry but not particularly engaging either. Even his personal reflections of certain sections...went down easy, didn't leave much of an impression. 🤷🏼‍♂️ 6mo
Robotswithpersonality 3/3 I did write down a couple books related to people I want to learn more about, so there's that. Maybe I should look for the history of a trail that's personally significant? Maybe disregard this review if the topic/treatment is more your thing.

“urban sprawl“ really is a phrase that evokes the ick.
Alas, for the proposed alternative to sprawl and suburbs I would love to see more of present day.

Pickpick

Having lived close to the AT in Tennessee, I knew many people who day hiked and a few who thru hiked the trail. That piqued my interest in accounts of hikers, and I‘ve read a few. (I‘ll tag my fav below.) This is the history of the trail told through the lives of 10 of its founders, advocates, and hikers. An interesting #audiobook!

Amiable This looks like a book my avid-hiker friend Nancy would enjoy! Stacking as an idea for a gift for her. Thanks for the heads up. 3y
Megabooks @Amiable yeah, sounds like a good gift! The author goes chronologically from the 1800s when people were first starting to map where the AT would go through to Bill Bryson and his famous account. The final chapter is about hiking in the Internet age. 👍🏻 3y

Cortg Ooh, I'll have to check it out! My son is currently thru-hiking the AT and is in NY right now. I'm loving his stories and living vicariuosly through him right now.

Megabooks @Cortg that‘s awesome!! I found the chapter on how phone/internet connectivity has changed the AT really interesting. I hope he has safe travels! 3y
Cortg @Megabooks Yeees! My sister and I were just talking about how much easier it is with phones now! I had a classmate that hiked it after graduation in the 90‘s. Very different experience! 3y
