I really really really wanted to like this book. So much about it reminded me of the iconic Candyman movie of the 90s. Tragic death. Vengeful ghost. Birth of an urban legend within an oppressed community. Alas, it went left (sexy encounters) when I desperately wanted it to go right (scare the shit out of me).

Reggie I agree with all of this. This book reminded me so much of what I love about Clive Barker. I liked the sexy parts but she owed this book maybe 200 more pages. 11mo

I've reached the halfway point of my third book and this feels like a good place to end my readathon run. I've had a great time picking out books throughout the day and then settling in for some dedicated reading time. Felt like each book was better than the last and now I'm ending my readathon with an absolute banger.

I really needed this omg 😭

This is the last book I finished for Week 1 of #Scarathlon.

I'm a fan of this author and although this book needed some editing and a rework of the rushed ending, it's still a pick for me. This story, that is heavily steeped in folklore, is a tell of anger, revenge, and racism. I love how Castro writes women in her books. They aren't weak; they are badass.

Another intriguing read from this author who has become a favorite of mine.

@Clwojick

Addison_Reads This is my 6th audiobook to finish for #LittenListen @aperfectmjk 2y
Reggie She totally owed us 300 more pages. If she had given us 300 more pages and the rest of the Barker experience she was giving it would have been an all time fave. 2y
Addison_Reads @Reggie I completely agree. I too felt cheated that we didn't get the rest of the Barker experience. I would love for her to revisit that and give us more, and even though this isn't my favorite, there is still just something so compelling about her writing that I love it even with flaws. 2y

Maaan! So I love V. Castro, but this needed to be a 40pg, 100pg, or 500pg story but not the 200 one we got. We meet Belinda who is lost in the world who travels to a friend‘s wedding at a farm where decades earlier, a migrant worker, Milagros, was violently killed by the owner‘s jealous and racist wife. I was totally into the anger awakening a goddess who would allow Milagros to take revenge from the afterlife but V. keeps going and this book 👇🏼

Reggie seemingly turns pulpy, there‘s a new religion and before we can get a real taste for the future there‘s a swipe at ICE in the form of an epilogue. I get it. I get what she‘s trying to say but it just seemed a short and cheap way to end. I love V‘s love of sex, her empowered women, her thoughts on our future(it‘s grim), and most of her writing style, and for all of that this is a pick, but there needs to be some cleaning up. 3y
ReadingOver50 This is the second book of hers I have read. I notice she has problems with endings. They always seem too rushed. 3y
Reggie @ReadingOver50 Yes! The dismounts are a problem. Lol, up until then it‘s a solid routine. 3y

I feel like I‘ve been scarce here lately!

1. I‘m doing the #DOWRTR but that‘s about it. I have too many off Litsy bookclub reads to catch up with.

2. Raw green beans & snap peas. Yes, just raw. For cooked, probably asparagus.

3. That I‘m too big to be stalked & eaten by a praying mantis.

SHARE & TAG IN!

Soscha Re: the mantis thing! Yes, in my SoCal gardening group & friend has a particularly large one stationed on her hummingbird feeders. They do eat hummingbirds. What an amazing & formidable insect…but, no thanks! 3y

I was enthralled by Milagro‘s story. The cruelty of the farmer‘s wife was unbelievable. The book was great. I read quickly because I wanted to know what would happen next. The only part I didn‘t like was the ending. This was the same problem I had with Goddess of Filth. Wonderful up until the end. I almost feel like Castro doesn't quite know how to end her books, so she rushes the ending. Overall, I liked this book and would recommend it.

<3 This episode was incredible to be a part of. V. Castro is so talented! Her writing is beautiful and brutal, and she is such a bright light in the horror community. Also, peep the Gibson's Bookstore tee! :) https://youtu.be/VHvQZatSHGk

The Queen of the Cicadas by V. Castro is an eerie and heartbreaking tale about racism and revenge that will leave you feeling haunted while you reflect on many things long after the last page.

This is a must read for all horror fans. While it had it‘s share of bloodshed and blood-boiling unfairness, it was also filled with a lot of hope.
