The Heart of Henry Quantum
The Heart of Henry Quantum | Pepper Harding
10 posts | 7 read | 8 to read
In the bestselling tradition of A Man Called Ove and the beloved film Love Actually, a quirky, socially awkward man goes on a quest to find his wife a last-minute Christmas gift and encounters several distractions—including bumping into his ex-girlfriend who was the one who got away. Henry Quantum has several thoughts going through his head at any given time, so it’s no surprise when he forgets something very important—specifically, a Christmas gift for his wife, which he realizes on the morning of December 23. Henry sets off that day in search of the perfect present for her: a bottle of Chanel No. 5 perfume. But much like Henry’s ever-wandering mind, his quest takes him in different and unexpected directions, including running into the former love of his life, Daisy. His wife, meanwhile, unhappy in her marriage, is hiding a secret of her own. And Daisy, who has made the unsettling choice of leaving her husband to strike out on her own, finds herself questioning whether she and Henry belong together after all. A sweet, funny, and touching debut from author Pepper Harding shows how the seemingly insignificant events of one single day can change our lives forever—perhaps, if we’re lucky, for the better.

I think this book was fantastic! It‘s about a man who goes shopping to buy his wife perfume for Christmas and evolves into his stream of consciousness. It explores the decisions he has made in his adult life and his relationships with women. The story is mostly told from Henry‘s perspective, but later you‘ll hear from the women. I could relate to many of his thoughts. Thanks @mkindness I remember this from a BOTNS episode. 😊

I get why lots of people don't enjoy this book and I think maybe they have calmer internal monologues than Harry Quantum. I identify with the random thoughts running through his head all the time!

With the start of this book, I am caught up through September on ARCs from NetGalley! The synopsis sounds great, but the reviews are pretty meh.

Quirky book is quirky. It works for a bit as we're introduced to Henry Quantum, but for me at least the attraction wore thin. The women in his life though, I realised I liked them better. His wife who realises she wants more than Henry. And Daisy, who realises she loved Henry, even though she let him go. Yes it was an affair but they worked. So, this is a character-focused book though the women are far more interesting in some ways

A new novel about unhappy, confused people at Christmastime that hopefully has an unhappy ending. The grinch in me loves it!

Equal parts romantic & quirky, with a San Francisco setting. Told from the POV of Henry, his wife Margaret, & his ex Daisy, it's contemplative look at relationships & love. There were scientific ramblings I wasn‘t expecting, & some swearing & sexual content. A good discussion book & would be good for anyone who likes a rambling, thoughtful book. I received an eARC copy of this book from Gallery Books via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

A melancholy book about people dissatisfied in their relationships and looking for something different in which to find their happiness. It takes place over the course of one day and has sections devoted to the psyche of each character in the drama. Nothing really stuck with me other than a group of lonely, miserable people at Christmas time. The description of this book said it was like 'Love Actually' but only if everyone was miserable.
