Incredible!! This book upended a lot of what I think about Edward the Confessor, King Harold II, and William the Conqueror because it is written from an English POV rather than a Norman POV (which is how history was recorded). It is dense and sweeping and wonderful, and the ending left me breathless. I know this history-that is, I knew how it would end before I ever started the book-and yet I found myself hopeful for a different outcome.

I‘m #currentlyreading the type of book I love most, a historical fiction set in the time before the Norman Conquest 1043-1066. This is about King Harold II up until around the time of his battle with William the Conqueror after the invasion of England. There are a ton of characters, but it helps me that I have some knowledge of this time and place. It‘s a nice, slow read for me as there is no audiobook available to accompany my print copy.

We came in through the front door, chilled and damp. We had just fought the darkness with its misty storms and deep, impenetrable fog. I walked across the threshold and turned on the first light I could. Then, out of nowhere, a booming, echoing voice: "Whooo arrrrt thooouuu?" My instincts drew me to the stairs. It was as if a tractor beam forced my sights to their top. And what do mine eyes behold?! A black apparition. #Coale black, imperious....
