The Closing of the Western Mind
The Closing of the Western Mind: The Rise of Faith and the Fall of Reason | Charles Freeman
6 posts | 2 read | 2 to read
A radical and powerful reappraisal of the impact of Constantines adoption of Christianity on the later Roman world, and on the subsequent development both of Christianity and of Western civilization. When the Emperor Contstantine converted to Christianity in 368 AD, he changed the course of European history in ways that continue to have repercussions to the present day. Adopting those aspects of the religion that suited his purposes, he turned Rome on a course from the relatively open, tolerant and pluralistic civilization of the Hellenistic world, towards a culture that was based on the rule of fixed authority, whether that of the Bible, or the writings of Ptolemy in astronomy and of Galen and Hippocrates in medicine. Only a thousand years later, with the advent of the Renaissance and the emergence of modern science, did Europe begin to free itself from the effects of Constantine's decision, yet the effects of his establishment of Christianity as a state religion remain with us, in many respects, today. Brilliantly wide-ranging and ambitious, this is a major work of history.

This is Anthony the Great, Anthony of the Desert, considered the original desert father, and erroneously believed to be the father of Christian ascetics. I fear he would be proud of the work of some of these parents who say Christian children do not need more than an 8th grade education in this day and age. 🙄 I knew he was extreme, but this is a whole other level of extreme. So much for the image of him reading the scriptures in a cave.

I think this is still quite true. If they would stay to themselves, if they would abide by separation of church and state, they would tear each other apart and would die out. Perhaps that is exactly why they cannot abide a separation of church and state. They know with a separation of church and state, they will never survive.

There was not even a consensus on what salvation meant. The church fathers disagreed strongly on who was being saved, from what, and for what!
purpose.
🤯🤯🤯
Well, this certainly isn‘t something anyone is teaching in theology/religion class. I would imagine the vast majority (if not all) of those people who claim to be practicing the original version of Christianity aren‘t even aware of this.

I‘ve been listening to this audiobook for a few days now. I‘m quite enjoying it, but I feel like this one would be more fun with a group or at least a partner, because there is so much to discuss here!

GingerAntics @TheBookHippie this is the book that has sent me to our IG chat with complete paradigm shifting thoughts. It sort of jives with my thought that Paul took over and ruined the original movement, but explains it from a different angle. So thought provoking. So much to grapple with mentally here. There is nothing like big ideas to grapple with to keep my mind from worrying. 1y

This book reminds us that Christian orthodoxy was determined by weird, sad, repressed men who wanted to exert control over others. Long-live paganism! #audiobook

This is an interesting spin on the topic of Christianity overriding reason and logic. Anti-semitism is much older than Constantine, but this book seems to posit that it developed (gained a stronger hold?) with the rise of Christianity. @TheBookHippie your earlier post on the anti-Semitism of the passion story has really got me thinking about this, and now here it is. I really can‘t wait to read this book now.

TheBookHippie You realize most people hate my thoughts provoking content 🤣 Truth is always SIMPLE straight forward. Logical. Jesus, a Jew, was a threat to the Romans, because he spoke of love, inclusion, acceptance, altruism. They hung him on a cross for protesting against the state, government and organized religion, religiosity and the like. He was also dark with nappy hair killed by a white person... Jews had zero authority in these times. Happy reading. 4y
TheBookHippie They teach Jews killed Jesus in every Christian school in my town, and in most of the churches here. 4y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie oh they taught that at catholic school, and I‘m telling you, if looks could kill we wouldn‘t be having this conversation, because when I raised my hand and said “but Jews had no power, the Romans did, and Jesus was a Jew, so how is it acceptable to be mean to them” that teacher nearly failed me for fourth grade right there. 4y

GingerAntics @TheBookHippie oh god, don‘t even get me started on the “white” Jesus BS. People were up in arms when Adam and Eve were black in Good Omens. HELLO!!! THEY WERE!!! Jesus was not in bloody Norway, he did not have blond hair and blue eyes. He didn‘t have green eyes. He didn‘t have long flowing locks of lovely, soft, fine hair. FOR. THE. LOVE!!! Girl, preach!!! 4y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie most people are morons and have never thought critically in their lives. It‘s pathetic we teach critical thinking...on things that aren‘t even thought out. You can‘t think critically without thinking something that might be against what you‘ve always believed. I swear, people are STUPID!!! 4y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics 92 detentions ... senior year... GPA 4.25 ✊🏼✊🏼👊🏼The Reformed Doctrine teacher told me I‘d be in jail or dead by 20... hmm 4y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie you would be in jail or dead by 20 because you don‘t stand for injustice and you dare to think critically? For the love. Let‘s be honest, people pay all this lip service, but no one actually wants anyone else to think critically. People just want everyone to celebrate Christmas so they don‘t even have to consider that someone might ignore them when they says Marry Christmas instead of happy bloody holidays. 🤦🏼‍♀️ 4y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie that is a lot of detentions, though. What were they giving you detentions for? 4y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics Arguing with teacher, hem on skirt 1/4 in too short. Shirt not buttoned to top. Tennis shoes. Jean jacket. Hooded sweater. Shirt with words. Essay counter points after I answered how the teacher wanted it learned. Red lipstick. Refusal to tell principal information about a friend. Smoking cigarette landed on parking lot not street.(I threw cation to wind daily) telling girls they didn‘t have to be mothers in health class.... 4y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics 😳😬🤣🤣🤣👊🏼✊🏼 4y
GingerAntics I love everything about that IG post. You were quite the rebel. Some of those rules sound ridiculous, though. 4y
