12 posts | 11 read | 12 to read
When he was two years old, Hunter Biden was badly injured in a car accident that killed his mother and baby sister. In 2015, he suffered the devastating loss of his beloved big brother, Beau, who died of brain cancer at the age of 46. These hardships were compounded by the collapse of his marriage and a years-long battle with drug and alcohol addiction. In Beautiful Things, Hunter recounts his descent into substance abuse and his tortuous path to sobriety. The story ends with where Hunter is todaya sober married man with a new baby, finally able to appreciate the beautiful things in life.

I was curious about Hunter since he seems to be in the news a lot. His memoir talks about his many life heartaches, his alcoholism, drug addiction and his many, many bad choices. I‘m hoping he can continue his path of sobriety and I‘m cheering for him. I liked that he read his audiobook.

I listened to this on audio and it is a searingly honest account of his descent into alcoholism and drug addiction. He doesn‘t pull any punches and doesn‘t seem to blame anyone but himself.

I have to say I don‘t know much about US politics but one things that comes out of this book is what a lovely, thoroughly decent man Joe Biden appears to be.

Not so sure about Hunter though with the most recent revelations…. 🤷‍♀️

WanderingBookaneer What are the most recent allegations? I‘m afraid to Google it and have the results be of the OAN/QANON variety. 3y
squirrelbrain I didn‘t know about them @WanderingBookaneer until I saw someone‘s recent review on here. They didn‘t make much news in the UK. There are texts showing him calling his (white?) lawyer the N word and other similar revelations. 3y
AlaMich In other words, just 2:00 on a Tuesday for the former occupant of the White House. 😠 3y

Tragic. The book itself was well written and vulnerable. I love that the president‘s son can speak so openly and (it seems) truthfully about his struggles with addiction, his marriage, and the all-encompassing grief following his brother Beau‘s death.
However, among the recent news of his previous actions I just cringe a little. I mean, just please do better.

Megabooks Yeah, Hunter has definitely made some mistakes, but I enjoyed this book, too. I just started this memoir about crack addiction by Bill Clegg. You may have already read it. I‘ve kept on meaning to read a book by Bill and this was available at the library. 4y

What a brave book to write. I wish Hunter the best and pray for his continued sobriety. No matter what you think of Joe Biden politically, this book will show you the man, and how much he loves is family. So glad I read it.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Whether you like the Bidens or not, there‘s no denying the immense heartache and loss they‘ve endured. The President‘s youngest son lays it bare. Having battled alcoholism and addiction off and on for years, he fell into a reckless spiral of hard drugs and debauchery following his brother‘s death and the disintegration of his 20+ year marriage. Dude is lucky as hell to be alive. This def does not feel sugarcoated, but raw and honest.

This was such a difficult read as I lost a bright friend to crack for several years. Heavy TW for drug abuse/alcoholism.

Hunter talks about the unique bond he and Beau had following the car accident where their mom and sister died. They were best friends and talked 3 times a day until Beau‘s death. Meanwhile, Hunter‘s 22 year marriage was failing after years of intermittent alcoholism. Then he talks about his decent into the underbelly. ⬇️

Megabooks ⬆️ He pulled no punches about exactly how bad it got and how much he lost. But he was saved by his new wife Melissa, who forced him to get clean. He does discuss his international work as well, for those who are interested. (And, can I be honest? While I loved this book, I kind of hate the narrative arc of being redeemed by the love of a good woman. But it is his story of his life, so 🤷🏻‍♀️. Still a great memoir, though!) 4y
Suet624 I think Joe says the same thing about Jill. 4y

marleed Haha - that my thought at the end of every Hallmark movie. Can‘t some happy ending happen because someone takes care of their own life and learns their personal happiness is not dependent on the romantic love of another person. But then I guess, no one purchases a Hallmark card for themselves ;) (edited) 4y
britt_brooke This is coming up in my holds any day now. I‘m not sure if I‘m emotionally prepared for it. 4y
Megabooks @marleed exactly!! I realize no one lives in a bubble, but I honestly hate that trope! 4y
Megabooks @britt_brooke it‘s heavy. I‘m seriously impressed he was able to read it himself. But I think you‘ll like it. 4y
