Meditations: A New Translation
Meditations: A New Translation | Marcus Aurelius, Gregory Hays
5 posts | 4 read
Marcus Aurelius Antoninus (a.d. 121-180) succeeded his adoptive father as emperor of Rome in a.d. 161-and Meditations remains one of the greatest works of spiritual and ethical reflection ever written. With a profound understanding of human behavior, Marcus provides insights, wisdom, and practical guidance on everything from living in the world to coping with adversity to interacting with others. Consequently, the Meditations have become required reading for statesmen and philosophers alike, while generations of ordinary readers have responded to the straightforward intimacy of his style. In Gregory Hays's new translation-the first in a generation-Marcus's thoughts speak with a new immediacy: never before have they been so directly and powerfully presented.>

I've always thought philosophy was more out of reach for the common man. All theory and no substance. Then, along came stoicism and proved me wrong. Meditations is about living your life as you should. It's about doing. My favorite quote: You could leave life right now. Let that determine what you do and say and think. Read this book. I'll be reading it again...soon.

“Then isn‘t it better to do what‘s up to you—like a free man—than to be passively controlled by what isn‘t, like a slave or a beggar?”

This was an interesting read, but redundant. Themes are repeated to the point that I don‘t think that the last three books were needed. It has some good advice and I‘m interested to learn more about modern stoicism. However, I always take advice from the wealthy/celebrities/the ruling class with a grain of salt…it‘s much easier for them to follow their own advice and be super chill about everything!😂

“To love my family, truth and justice. It was through him that I . . . conceived of a society of equal laws, governed by equality of status of speech, and of rulers who respect the liberty of their subjects above all else.”
