Disney's Villains meet Gotham in this gritty fairy tale-inspired crime series. Mary Elizabeth Heart is a high school senior by day, but by night she's an intern at the Monarch City police department. She watches with envy from behind a desk as detectives come and go, trying to contain the city's growing crime rate. For years, tension has simmered between the city's wealthy elite, and their plans to gentrify the decaying neighborhood called the Scar - once upon a time the epicenter of all things magic. When the daughter of one of the city's most powerful businessmen goes missing, Mary Elizabeth is thrilled when the Chief actually puts her on the case. But what begins as one missing person's report soon multiplies, leading her down the rabbit hole of a city in turmoil. There she finds a girl with horns, a boyfriend with secrets, and what seems to be a sea monster lurking in a poison lake. As the mystery circles closer to home, Mary finds herself caught in the fight between those who once had magic, and those who will do anything to bring it back. This dark and edgy YA series explores the reimagined origins of Maleficent, Ursula, Captain Hook, and other infamous Disney Villains like you've never seen before.

I had the opportunity to go to Tucson for the weekend! Anytime I go I make sure to make a stop at Bookman‘s which is my favorite used bookstore. Which actually is two stores now. I went to both and found a lot of the retro Goosebumps, Dear America, and American Girl books I didn‘t have yet. Plus I found so many other books by a favorite author and just interesting books I wanted to add to my collection. 🥰💛 Great prices and finds this time. 😍

Ruthiella Wow! What a haul! 👍 12mo

#Scarathlon Photo Challenge - Shadow

Also finished this YA book today. Though the premise is intriguing (modern day origin story centering Disney villains as rebels/the heroes), the plot was either ridiculous or nonexistent. Can‘t just be my ARC copy - this was just not good.

Rocky start but the finale is set on Halloween plus 490 in Word Search points. 🤷🏻‍♀️ #TeamWhoYaGonnaCall

Clwojick Oh no! I hate when the cover gets you hooked, and then the plot lets you down. 13mo
FlynnDewey Disney's been having a lot of writer issues lately lol. 13mo

This was so much fun! A different take on the Disney world with all the characters. Looking at things from the villains side you can understand why they are viewed as they are and why they‘ve done what have. It‘s an interesting perspective and seeing them as teens in a world similar to ours makes them relatable. I‘m really looking forward to more in this series as I can tell it‘s going to be epic.

So while Josh was at the docs having his toes cut open I was at the bookstore (docs wouldn‘t let me in because of Covid). I went on a bit of a spree. But I love finding books I‘ve not heard about and trying them out.

Two of these fit that mold, one is a #coverlove, and one I have to judge for Tournament of Books so I‘m reading it next. Any guess what book it is?

LaraS I‘m loving that Escaping Eleven cover! Giving me flashbacks to the Crow movie from the 90s... 4y
LibrarianRyan @LaraS I know right! I just made josh watch that last week. Won‘t lie, I like movie 2 better but I love that book cover. No idea what it‘s about. I bought it for the cover. 4y

Nest up is a book about Disney Villains I believe (Maleficent is on the cover duhhhh). Its supposed to be modern and gritty, ie outside the fairytale world. My friend and former staff member who reads and loves most the same things I do says this is an okay read. Her, and other reviews I have read say it's much more MG than YA, which is a good thing.
