Following the death of her son, Mieko Togan? takes an increasing interest in the personal affairs of her widowed daughter-in-law, Yasuko. Devastated by her loss, she skillfully manipulates the relationships between Yasuko and the two men who are in love with her, encouraging a dalliance that will have terrible consequences. Meanwhile, hidden in the shadows, is Mieko’s mentally-handicapped daughter, who has her own role to play in her mother’s bizarre schemes. In Masks, Enchi has crafted a stunning and understated novel of seduction and infidelity.

#AprilBookShowers #masked If nothing else these prompts have made me quite embarrassed at the number of books I own but haven't yet read ? This is another one with an intriguing premise that's on my TBR. From the Goodreads description: "Masks takes its name from the Noh masks of Japanese dramas, and much is made of spirit possession. This is a curiously elegant and scandalous tale of sexual deception and revenge."

rockpools I know! I have a much better idea of what's lurking on my shelves now! Still don't read them, but hey... 8y
batsy @RachelO Right? At least we know what's in there. We'll just get around to reading it the next time 📚📚📚 8y
saresmoore This book sounds like it should have a trigger warning for crazy, manipulative mothers-in-law (one of which I happen to have). It still sounds intriguing, though. 8y

batsy @saresmoore Ugh, I'm sorry. One of many things where it's interesting in fiction and horrid in life. 8y
RealLifeReading Oh wow this sounds good in that weird Japanese lit kind of way. 8y
