An exhilarating spy thriller about two women CIA agents who become intertwined around a threat to the Russia Division--one that's coming from inside the agency. Lyndsey Duncan worries her career with the CIA might be over. After lines are crossed with another intelligence agent during her most recent assignment, she is sent home to Washington on administrative leave. So when a former colleague, now Chief of the Russia Division, recruits her for an internal investigation, she jumps at the chance to prove herself once more. Lyndsey was once a top handler in the Moscow Field Station, known as the "human lie detector" and praised for recruiting some of the most senior Russian officials. But now, three Russian assets have been discovered--including one of her own--and the CIA is convinced there's a mole in the department. With years of work in question, and lives on the line, Lyndsey is thrown back into life at the agency, only this time tracing the steps of those closest to her. Meanwhile, fellow agent Theresa Warner can't avoid the spotlight. She is the infamous "Red Widow," the wife of a former director killed in the field under mysterious circumstances. With her husband's legacy shadowing her every move, Theresa is a fixture of the Russia Division, and as she and Lyndsey strike up an unusual friendship, her knowledge proves invaluable. But as Lyndsey uncovers a surprising connection to Theresa that could answer all of her questions, she exposes a terrifying web of secrets within the department, if only she is willing to unravel it...

I wasn't blown away, but I was engaged and entertained. A fun spy hunt tale that's more about the why than the who. A good quick palate cleanser of a read.

Loved this read. Written by a former intelligence analyst all of the American/Russian spy tropes are in this book. Lyndsey is brought in to find who killed her Russian link and Theresa wants to defend her husband who was killed in Russia. Who would you trust?

More sedate and realistic than most spy novels but an enjoyable read.

Heck yeah, this was a fantastic espionage thriller made more relevant by 2022 events. Lyndsey Duncan, the main character, is just my kind of heroine. Less than perfect but whip-smart and determined to get to the bottom of a bad situation. Alma Katsu knows how to throw twists into the lightning-fast plot. Plus, her own CIA background makes this story even better. I am now officially holding my breath for book two in the series! #thebibliophage2022

DGRachel I bought this when it came out but I still haven‘t gotten to it. I seriously need to stop buying new books and getting new books from the library, and read the ones I have sitting patiently waiting for me! 2y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @DGRachel Yaaaasss. Me too. I requested and got book two from NetGalley, so that pushed me to read this one now. But honestly, the number of unread books in my collection keeps me up at night sometimes. (Not reading but wondering if I‘ll live to finish them.) 2y

I love Alma Katsu‘s prose, and this spy novel was a refreshing change of pace from her horror books. It also does a good job of managing suspense while also not becoming a “James Bond” type of book. #thriller

Author Alma Katsu used her years in the intelligence community to bring detail and authenticity to this spy novel about the search for a traitor in the CIA's Russia division. Lyndsey Duncan is tasked with finding the mole, but her own indiscretions cast a shadow she finds hard to shake. Not sure I agree with Lyndsey on the ethics of the final reckoning, but espionage is pretty much all gray areas, I suppose. An interesting read.

I truly wanted to love this book, and gave it the benefit of not DNFing by about the fourth chapter. But absolutely nothing about this story worked for me; the title inexplicably gives away the mole, the search for whom is powered primarily by an online CIA chat room; I'm sorry, but any double agent stupid enough to leave a digital trail all over a Workplace bulletin board deserves to be caught.

Serious spy fiction aficionados steer clear. D-
