One of our 4 books for clubs next month!

I love it when a book teaches me about pieces of cultures that I have not encountered previously. Here, it‘s the Gullah culture, which is fascinating. The deep connection to nature experienced by enslaved African people brought to America and how the knowledge passed to their descendants is a common theme in books for adults, but I‘ve not come across it treated quite so beautifully in a children‘s book. Highly recommended.

Fun MG novel set in the 1960s in the Gullah speaking region of South Carolina. Gullah is not a culture or language you often see in books particularly as the main character‘s culture. I enjoyed learning more about that culture through this novel.

A fantastic middle grade novel. It is impossible not to love the main character, sweet little Jezebel, & her twin brother Jay. They both had such heart & a great sense of family instilled in them by their strong mother and doting uncle. Throw in some magic, some pretty scary scenes, and coming of age pre-teen angst, this book has it all.

1) Just finished Root Magic, which was amazing. Made an excellent way to pass the waiting time after getting my second vaccine shot!
2) I have a pretty even mix of both on my shelves.
