Androcles and the Lion
Androcles and the Lion | George Bernard Shaw
1 post | 1 read | 1 to read
Famed playwright George Bernard Shaw's quirky version of the ancient Androcles fable deftly combines elements of satire and humor along with a surprisingly philosophically complex view of Christianity and religious belief systems in general. This playful take on the issues of persecution and martyrdom is as timely today as it was when initially published a century ago.

#OnThisDay in 1962, a bi-alphabetic version of George Bernard Shaw's "Androcles and the Lion" was published in England, as directed by the terms of his will. Shaw desired a new alphabet to promote increased clarity and literacy, and had left money in his will for its creation, with the stipulations it should be at least 40 letters, as phonetic as possible, and distinct from the Latin alphabet. ?

TheKidUpstairs The Shavian alphabet was created by 4 men, and the remaining funds were put into publishing Androcles in both Latin and Shavian scripts. #HistoryGetsLIT 2y
