It takes a while to address what the child is dealing with (stuttering), which may create opportunity for many children dealing with different speech things to find a connection with the text. The art and poetry in this book are beautiful. #PictureBook #DisabilitiesRep
In this autobiographical story, Scott portrays a young boy who has a “bad speech day” at school. His dad‘s advice helps him find ways to rethink his bad speech days. A great story that teaches acceptance. #PictureBook Letter I #BBRc
I Talk Like a River by Jordan Scott and illustrated by Sydney Smith
Schneider Family Book Award
There is a poetic quality to this writing that pulls at your heart strings and emphasizes themes of fitting in. A young boy discovers how his speech (and stutter) is a sometimes tumultuous or serene river.

Such a beautiful read. I hope to live long enough to see the day when people with differences are treated equally by their peers. We have made a lot of progress already in my lifetime. #kindnessmatters
A poet‘s reflections (see what I did there?) on how his father would take him to the river when he had a “bad speech day” and tell him: “You see how that water moves, son? That‘s how you speak.”
And then he would watch the water bubbling, churning, whirling, and crashing. His father took him to the river so he would feel less alone, so he would connect his way of speaking with the natural world.
This is a beautiful book.
