Art of Rest: How to Find Respite in the Modern Age (Main)
Art of Rest: How to Find Respite in the Modern Age (Main) | Claudia Hammond
4 posts | 3 read | 10 to read
Today busyness has become a badge of honour. We want to say we're busy, yet at the same time we feel exhausted. Instead, we should start taking rest seriously as a method of self-care and this book can help us to work out how. The Art of Rest draws on ground-breaking research Claudia Hammond collaborated on--'The Rest Test' the largest global survey into rest ever undertaken, which was completed by 18,000 people across 135 different countries. Much of value has been written about sleep, but rest is different; it is how we unwind, calm our minds, and recharge our bodies. And, as the survey revealed, how much rest you get is directly linked to your sense of well-being. Counting down through the top ten activities which people find most restful, Hammond explains why rest matters, examines the science behind the results to establish what really works, and offers a roadmap for a new, more restful and balanced life.

I have loved this book. The final chapter is all about reading and it‘s fascinating. I‘ll definitely listen to this one again

@rockpools posts about this one made me want to read it and I‘m so glad I did. Such an enjoyable listen. It‘s basically a list of the top 10 things people find restful (reading being no.1) & why. The author looks at research and statistics as to why the things chosen might be considered restful but she doesn‘t just blindly accept the studies done. Brilliantly done. If felt like such an easygoing listen although there‘s a lot of information in it.

rockpools I‘m so pleased you enjoyed this. It was quite fun, wasn‘t it? 2y
youneverarrived @rockpools it really was 😁 2y

This afternoon in ‘books I meant to review weeks ago…‘

This was really quite fun. Hammond was part of a global survey on BBC World Service, looking at which activities people find restful. She presents the top 10 here, along with scientific around each of them. She also makes her opinions known, which led to me actively arguing with her through parts of the book, where she goes off-topic(being alone/lonely- not the same!) or ‘just doesn‘t

rockpools get it‘ (mindfulness).

It was, however, a really engaging interesting read and I particularly liked the chapter on reading (we agreed on that one 😄). If you want a calming, restful book, however, maybe look elsewhere!

Thanks for sending me this Helen - it was really fun! @squirrelbrain

squirrelbrain Sorry it wasn‘t very relaxing 😌… sounds intriguing though! 3y
rockpools @squirrelbrain I had lots of very enjoyable discussions with her 😂😂 And I decided to do a month without my FitBit, which has actually been quite restful. It‘s bizarre the things you take from these books! 3y
squirrelbrain I was thinking about recording lots of things (miles walked amongst others) whilst I‘m off during Sept but I‘ve come to think it might not be such a good idea…… 3y
rockpools @squirrelbrain It‘s fun to do (tracking) but it‘d become a habit/something else to beat myself up over, rather than an incentive to do more recently. Haven‘t decided whether to start again or have an extended holiday/try something else. 3y

This book is really quite funny! For a book on rest, it‘s not remotely restful- I‘m mentally having a full-on debate with the author most of the time. And for a science writer, she is OPINIONATED (not a fan of mindfulness; big fan of TV!) She was part of a team surveying the activities people find restful- the book covers the top ten.

rockpools I‘ve just finished the walking chapter, which has been my favourite so far. Now considering ditching the FitBit for August, and wondering how much the neighbours will hate me if I carry on with Zombies, Run! indoors for the next week 😁 3y
TrishB It sounds engaging anyway! 3y
rockpools @TrishB It is! And it‘s inspired me to do some exercise, which is a) surprising b) no bad thing! 3y

Suet624 Rest and exercise sound like opposites to me. :) 3y
rockpools @Suet624 Yup. A very surprising turn of events 😊 3y
SamAnne I feel like this book will irritate me but I can't resist stacking! Looks interesting. 3y
rockpools @SamAnne Probably! The first couple of chapters did wind me up, but now I‘ve settled in to it, it‘s fascinating- she looks at loads of scientific studies, but the tone is very light. I‘m enjoying it, even when I disagree with her. 3y
