Thebes
Thebes: The Forgotten City of Ancient Greece | Paul Cartledge
3 posts | 3 read | 1 to read
The riveting, de?nitive account of the ancient Greek city of Thebes, by the acclaimed author of The Spartans Among the extensive writing available about the history of ancient Greece, there is precious little about the city-state of Thebes. At one point the most powerful city in ancient Greece, Thebes has been long overshadowed by its better-known rivals, Athens and Sparta. In Thebes: The Forgotten City of Ancient Greece, acclaimed classicist and historian Paul Cartledge brings the city vividly to life and argues that it is central to our understanding of the ancient Greeks achievementswhether politically or culturallyand thus to the wider politico-cultural traditions of western Europe, the Americas, and indeed the world. From its role as an ancient political power, to its destruction at the hands of Alexander the Great as punishment for a failed revolt, to its eventual restoration by Alexanders successor, Cartledge deftly chronicles the rise and fall of the ancient city. He recounts the history with deep clarity and mastery for the subject and makes clear both the differences and the interconnections between the Thebes of myth and the Thebes of history. Written in clear prose and illustrated with images in two color inserts, Thebes is a gripping read for students of ancient history and those looking to experience the real city behind the myths of Cadmus, Hercules, and Oedipus.

Every. Single. Time. I have to look up how to pronounce this place. #oy

Here comes Thebes again.
Do you rhyme with bees or teepees?
Once more, I must check.

JenlovesJT47 I know how that is! #frustrating ♥️♥️♥️ 1mo
BkClubCare Yeah? I have always assumed it was one syllable. A word I heard today that I don‘t think I had ever heard outloud (only in print) was “chicanery” 1mo
AmyG I thought it was always one syllable too. @dabbe is it one or two? 1mo

lil1inblue I had to google it. ? There's a whole reddit thread about how to pronounce Cebes of Thebes. (I think "Seeb-ease of Theebz" was the consensus for modern pronunciation.) 1mo
rwmg Neither - in English it rhymes with dweebs 1mo
AnnCrystal 👏🏼🐝👍🏼🤔 The ancient city??? The one in Greece or Egypt?? Greek's name for: “Thebes“ - Egyptian's name for: “Waset“ just to add further complexity 🤗🐝💝.

P.S. Greece called both cities Thebes...

rubyslippersreads I‘ve always pronounced it “Theebz.” 1mo
dabbe @JenlovesJT47 IKR? 🧡💜💛 1mo
dabbe @BkClubCare You are correct! It's THEEBZ phonetically. I always was to say THEE-beez, though. 😂 1mo
dabbe @AmyG See? I have people doubting now. Oops. It's THEEBZ, but I want to say THEE-beez. 😂 1mo
dabbe @lil1inblue Interesting. I think people just gave up and allow both pronunciations now. The so-called correct way by most snobby dictionary people is THEEBZ. 1mo

GingerAntics Oh good, I‘m glad we came to the correct conclusion… or at least that I‘ve been saying it correctly all this time. lol 1mo

A scholar of classical Greece shines a light on Thebes. He has to scrape up some material, because Thebes is always in the middle of the conflicts between Sparta and Athens. I learned A LOT about the Peloponnesian Wars and revisited Theban myths of Oedipus and Antigone. This was a short 11-hour audiobook. 🤓

This author tried his best to make this interesting. And some of it definitely was. But this may not be for everyone.
