Ms Watson is an amazing storyteller with lovable characters. Nala makes me cringe every time she lies just a little to please new love interest Tye and, of course, it eventually all comes tumbling down. The cast of characters that make up Nala‘s family made me want to sit and have dinner with them on Aunt Liz‘s rooftop patio!!
wow wow wow I‘m ecstatic to have these gifts from this Black History Month swap and to keep celebrating black excellency all year long ๐ thanks to @Chelleo !! I‘m so excited to read these books, I‘m obsessed with sending post cards (tho I‘m tempted to keep these on my wall) andโฆTHAT CANDY!!! It was gone within 10 min of me seeing them. I‘ll def be placing an order for more (haven‘t looked it up yet but if you like candy their name is Chamoda‘s)
This is a really enjoyable book. The protagonist, Nala, is incredibly likeable and relatable, and her relationships with her family and friends - both the good times and the bad - are portrayed beautifully. A lovely coming of age story of insecurity, and accepting yourself and others.
#ReadHarder challenge 23: An own voices YA book with a black main character that isn't about black pain..
It's pretty hard to go wrong with a Renรฉe Watson novel! Her characters are just so real and vulnerable and delightful. Have you read Piecing Me Together yet?!?!?

I didn‘t even have a chance to post that I was reading it before I finished. ๐ค I have read other books by this author and they have one thing in common; they‘re all amazing. This book definitely tugs at the heart strings, and I found myself shedding a tear more than once. My one and only criticism is that at times the perspective was a bit mature. Overall a great read. Onto my next read while the mojo is flowing. ๐ โญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธ

This is such a heartwarming story about balancing having a sense of belonging with stepping into your own personhood. Being Jamaican and also growing up in New York, this book was more nostalgic than I could have anticipated. I loved Nala's journey and how she handled herself after making a big mistake- something we must all learn to do. I am so glad I decided to include YA fiction in my reading list this year!
Renee Watson won quite a few awards with her last book. Here is hoping the streak continues.
