This book dabbled in every interesting plot without completely following through. Best friends, frenemies, drugs, psychosis, murder, ghosts, etc. I wish the author just picked one and stuck with it.

This novel scratched my itch for a coming-of-age tale. Set in the early 80s when Alphabet City was better known for missing girls and heroin than German beer, Baltimore native Phoebe styles herself into Astrid, a fortune teller to the famous at one of NYC‘s hottest clubs. She has a prickly friendship with her roommate, Carmen. The book follows a transitional year in her 20s. People who lived these times may better know the secondary people. ⬇️
So fundamentally,I guess any issues I have with this book are not because of poor writing or a bad story, but rather because I‘m not a huge fan of extreme drug use. The story itself is well written, but there are a lot of trauma triggers here related to abuse of drugs and alcohol. This story is a raw look at one girl‘s struggle to make it in New York in the ‘80‘s. There also seems to be some codependency issues between the two main characters.
I wanted it to be edgier. That said it was an exciting time to move to NYC the mid 80s .Phoebe wants to make her way in the big city with a friend raised there as an unreliable guide. She is mourning the loss of her dad , falling for the wrong men. Still , she might be able to make a go of it .I wanted it to be more post punk less celebrity sightings in orientation.
Considering I have a book club deadline, 2 books here that can‘t be renewed & a couple of books I‘ve been reading a long time , a little too ambitious at the Library!😃
Set in 1984 in New York City, this is the story of Phoebe, a recent graduate, in search for a new adventure. Phoebe gets derailed by her Father‘s death, but she makes it make to NYC just in time for New Years. This book has sex, drugs, adultery, kidnapping and more. It was a very messy book at times, but some how culminated to a decent ending. I personally found all the characters grating at times, and thought this is just too unbelievable.
Perfect book mail today fiction nonfiction perfect combination for me ,
