pickA surreal journey through three stories arguably: Brik's, Lazarus Averbuch's and his family's (whose story is based on a real one) and the author's. Brik becomes more unlikable as the story goes on, and it likely is intentional. By contrast, Lazarus' stoey only becomes more sad and depressing. A lot of the author is in Brik's story, and indeed much of his background is Brik's. Its well worth a read, even if you come to want less of Brik. 4/5.
This is a strange book. I can‘t tell if I actually like it or not. 🤔 This afternoon I was sure I was going to DNF it. This evening I‘m not so sure. Anybody read it and have an opinion?
pick2 stories intertwine—that of a young Jewish immigrant killed by the Chicago chief of police in 1908 & that of an aspiring writer, also an immigrant to Chicago, who, 100 years later, stumbles upon the story & needs to know more—in a moving tale about immigration, belonging, identity, history, truth, despair, hope & more. Hemon‘s writing is exceptional with humor, beauty, fury & hard truths jostling for position on each page. A remarkable book. ❤️

Enjoyed Escape from Aleppo, which definitely gave me lots to think about, and am now turning my attention to Operation Finish ALL the Books. Ok, maybe not all the books I‘m in the middle of, it‘s not a HUGE number but it isn‘t exactly a SMALL one either, but at least these three this weekend. I‘m really enjoying all three—very different—books and want to have them done so I‘m ready for Children of Blood and Bone on Tuesday. I. Can. Do. It. 🤞

Love. This. Book. I could quote from it all day but will try not to so I‘m not a nuisance. Hemon‘s writing is exquisite and I can already tell this will be a book I recommend. Sometimes you just know from the very first page.
