A Short History of Women
A Short History of Women: A Novel | Kate Walbert
NOMINATED FOR THE LOS ANGELES TIMES BOOK PRIZE A profoundly moving portrait of the complicated legacies of mothers and daughters, A Short History of Women chronicles five generations of women from the close of the nineteenth century through the early years of the twenty-first. Beginning in 1914 at the deathbed of Dorothy Trevor Townsend, a suffragette who starves herself for the cause, the novel traces the echoes of her choice in the stories of her descendantsa brilliant daughter who tries to escape the burden of her mothers infamy; a granddaughter who chooses a conventional path, only to find herself disillusioned; a great-granddaughter who wryly articulates the free-floating anxiety of post-9/11 Manhattan. In a kaleidoscope of characters and with a richness of imagery, emotion, and wit, A Short History of Women is a thought-provoking and vividly original narrative that crisscrosses a centurya book for "any woman who has ever struggled to find her own voice; to make sense of being a mother, wife, daughter, and lover" (Associated Press).

Bailedbailed

Well, I'm not off to such a hot start with my #TBRBingo. 😬 Does this count as a square read since I really did try to make it through it?

I honestly can't remember the last time I was so bored by a book. I read over 50 pages over the last couple days and I couldn't tell you anything about this book. Not worth it. Plenty of other books to read.

LauraBrook Yep I think it counts! Too bad it was a bail. 😕 7y
emtobiasz Sounds like it counts to me! You still crossed it off your TBR! 7y
Captivatedbybooks I think it counts you tried 7y

WhatDeeReads It definitely counts. The point is to remove books from your TBR. You've done that. Have a treat! 7y
Ruri_kaichou Yup. I would count it. 7y

I listened to this TED Talk today & found it very appropriate for International Women's Day. I also think it's something many Littens can get behind. I know at least half the books I read are by women & I'm working on diversifying that to include women of all backgrounds. It's important that everyone has a chance to tell their story. #internationalwomensday

BookInMyHands Have you heard Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's "The Danger of a Single Story." It beautifully articulated why I've been trying to read diversely: https://www.ted.com/talks/chimamanda_adichie_the_danger_of_a_single_story 8y
Amandajoy @BookInMyHands Thanks for the suggestion! I downloaded it this morning. I also ordered her new book yesterday 😊 8y
BookInMyHands @Amandajoy Awesome! I tried to put it on hold last night, but it's not in the library system yet. I'll have to fix that when I get to work... 8y
