Painted Clay (Classic Reprint)
Painted Clay (Classic Reprint) | Capel Boake

Excerpt from Painted Clay Years ago the suburb of Packington had been a stretch of green, hilly land, covered with gum trees, overlooking Port Phillip Bay, and Melbourne. The advent of building speculators, trams and trains had changed all that, however, and now it was a popular, middle-class suburb, proud of its huge shops, State School, Public Gardens and Library. Through the main streets thundered the electric trams on their way to the city, and hundreds of people thronged the busy streets all hours of the day. Packington had rapidly become the busiest suburb outside Mel bourne. The sea had faded into the blue distance and now the only view to be had was that of the tall chim neys of the factories and the red roofs of the thou sands of little villas that had sprung up, mushroom fashion, all over the surrounding district. The curious visitor, looking casually as he passed by at one or two of the older houses would wonder why they were named so inappropriately, Bay View, and Sea View. He did not realise that he was looking at a link with the past. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Prairiegirl_reading That‘s super interesting! There is no simple answer or just one reason for the name change which makes perfect sense but I definitely never thought of it like this. Very interesting article. 4y
Bertha_Mason Yeah, I would be pretty pissed off if someone insisted on calling me my birth name in the name of feminism and honoring a "womanhood" I only occasionally and provisionally have or want. 4y
Clare-Dragonfly Thanks for sharing that. I was a bit uncomfortable with the collection for similar reasons: they obviously cannot have asked the authors whether they want the books published under their female names. 4y
