Ward Number Six and Other Stories
Ward Number Six and Other Stories | Anton Pavlovich Chekhov, Ronald Hingley
8 posts | 7 read | 8 to read
Writing towards the close of the nineteenth century, Chekhov - himself a country doctor - recorded in his fiction the symptoms of a diseased society. The seven stories collected here are a bleakly savage indictment of a society paralysed by spiritual malaise, and morbidly conscious of evils which can neither be killed nor cured. This volume also contains an Introduction by Ronald Hingley.

#OffMyShelf for short stories; anthology, or essays

I‘m really wishing I had taken a Russian literature class in college. I absolutely loved this short story collection. An incredible writer, Chekhov definitely transcends time. I can see why he‘s considered one of the greatest short story writers.

So this book is off my TBR shelf, but I‘m definitely keeping it & will revisit these stories often.

Ruthiella Nice work! I‘ve not read Chekov yet, but he‘s on my list. All the classics really, because they are the building blocks for what came after. 6h
wanderinglynn @Ruthiella I recommend Chekhov—he‘s very readable. 6h
Lesliereadsalot I took two Russian literature classes in college. Have never regretted reading War and Peace and The Brothers Karamazov among many others. The professor was blind and made these novels come alive. Best classes I took! 4h
ferskner Russian lit is so daunting before you start but then so addictive! 4h

“But people have grown better,” observed the bailiff.
“In what way?”
“Cleverer.”
“Cleverer, maybe, that‘s true, young man; but what‘s the use of that? What earthly good is cleverness to people on the brink of ruin? One can perish without cleverness. What‘s the good of cleverness to a huntsman if there is no game?”

From The Pipe. Written in 1887. Still relevant (or even more so) in 2025.

Readergrrl Heartbreakingly so. 💔 2d

I ♡ thrift store books I've never heard of n having a 100 yr old story make me think. Chekhov is a fascinating person in his own right. This story shows 2 POV'S of both lower n higher class of people. It exlemplies how a higher class thinking person can find wisdom only he can see in a mentally unstable guy. Asking the age old question how close is insanity to genius? Truly a must read for anyone interested in psychological and philosophy.

Ward six specifically is about life in an asylum. It was also made into films. #insaneinthebrain #90sinJuly

I'm not a huge short story fan, but these were good.
