Panpan

I feel really mixed about this one. On the one hand, it‘s a chapter book appropriate for young readers who read above their grade level - which is hard to find. It‘s got strong female protagonists. It‘s got interesting magic. On the other hand, the world building is slow and incomplete. There are pacing problems with how the lead character “discovers” her skills. But perhaps my biggest complaint and reason for pan (in comments)

JSW ... is how one of the characters displays reasoning and thinking patterns that are a bit different and which my brain reads as neurodivergent. I was so excited to see this in a lead character until it‘s determined that she‘s actually part machine. Although I see where the author is going and how this fits the plot, it diminishes the character and makes her a sidekick, not a lead; it‘s also a horrible stereotype. I‘m disappointed. (edited) 6y
JSW This book could be handled well if you read it with your child and critique it together. Otherwise there are better young adult stories out there. 6y

My #currentread is a steampunk adventure for tweens/teens. It's a fun, light read and I'm really enjoying it so far. #riotgrams

This is a fun story! Two friends end up on the run and encounter creatures, adventures, and new friends. With elements of magic, machines, steampunk, fantastic beasts, and kingdoms at war, this book is fast-moving and has a lot to enjoy. The first in a trilogy, I am excited to read more!

2017 #4 Steampunk YA Audio This was definitely for the younger YA group with a hint of blushing crushes. Overall an interesting premise and world construction. I think that I would have liked more and was left a little but why at the end. Remembering though that I am not the intended audience it was good with action and strong female characters. Similar to the Burn series but less romancy.

ISO middle grade book recommendations. Must have a beautiful cover, fantasy a plus. My daughter became a reader overnight. I'm overjoyed. There is a catch, as there often is in parenting. She only wants to read what is on my bookshelf and my bookshelf is not 9 year old reader friendly. I picked the prettiest middle grade covers I could find in our tiny library and have slipped them onto my shelf among my YA collection. These should hold her over.

Johanna414 You could try The Search for Wondla by Tony DiTerlizzi, anything by Jessica Day George, Rick Riordan or Shannon Hale, The Humming Room by Ellen Potter, Magyk by Angie Sage or The Spirit Animals Series... Fablehaven by Brandon Mull, Serafina and the Black Cloak by Robert Beatty, Dollbones by Holly Black 8y

I was hooked! Several other teachers said they couldn't get into it, but...not me! Moving friendship, creative story line, fantastical characters!

Had a hard time getting into this audio. Not sure if it's the book or narration or just not feeling a kids book at the mo. Moving on!

Peaceful_Reader I loved this book and used it for a 6th grade book club. I hope you'll go back to it. Hard copy might be better.🌞 8y
LizGotauco Hi @Peaceful_Reader! It's been popular with my tweens and teens too! Definitely has the ingredients for a book I'd like so I hope to try again. 8y
