Nightblood (Paperbacks from Hell)
Nightblood (Paperbacks from Hell) | T. Chris Martindale
4 posts | 2 read | 4 to read
As a soldier in the jungle of Vietnam, Chris Stiles learned how to fight against a deadly enemy. Now the war is over, but when his brother is slaughtered in Central Park, Chris finds himself called back into action, this time to battle a different kind of foe: an army of the undead! His quest for the creature that killed his brother brings him to Isherwood, Indiana, home to 800 people--and one ancient vampire. As all hell breaks loose and the townspeople are turned one by one into blood-sucking monsters, will Chris's tactical skills and his arsenal of automatic weapons be enough to stop the vampire menace? This first-ever reprint of T. Chris Martindale's action-packed vampire romp Nightblood (1990) includes a new introduction by Grady Hendrix (Paperbacks from Hell) and the original cover painting by Greg Winters. "It's heavy-duty armaments and ghostly aid versus fangs and immortality . . . genuine entertainment!"--Locus Magazine "The scares jump off the page at you!"--Gary Brandner, author of The Howling "It tingled my spine!"--Robert Bloch, author of Psycho

And in that moment he saw her, really saw her as she now was. Her empty eyes were suddenly afire, and her panting was hot and noxious on his face and neck, and her lips, those full pouting lips he‘d always loved so, were thinned to translucence over the multitude of teeth behind them. It was a mockery of her, a Gahan Wilson portrait of his beloved. And it was going to kill him.

Vietnam vet Chris Stiles is summoned to a small town in Indiana to investigate paranormal events by the ghost of his brother. When he arrives in town & heads into the local diner to begin his investigations, & to replenish his depleted stock of reading material (Harlequin Romance paperbacks), he meets Billie a local diner staff & mother of Del & Bart. Del & Bart will subsequently become directly involved in a local legend which leads to a (CONT)

vivastory plague of vampires. Pub. in 1990, this book is very late 80s in parts, with several battle scenes incorporating nunchucks & there are quite a few spinning kicks involved. It feels a bit like Monster Squad, which lends it some campy charm. But it is also very bleak & violent. Like the war that Chris returned home from, the town itself becomes a battlefield towards the end between the humans & the vampires & obviously not all of the humans survive. 9mo
vivastory I will say that there was one particularly effective scene midway through the book where the undead were trying to get inside of a house that creeped me out. One of the strengths of the book is the vampire mythology that Martindale dives into. 9mo
Reggie This sounds fantastic and totally my thing. 9mo

Pickpick

My local library on Libby recently acquired some of the horror novels re-released in the Paperbacks from Hell series.

Nightblood is a campy vampire story set in a rural town full of secrets and small mindedness. The main character, led by the ghost of his brother, hunts down the undead.

This book had everything I love in an old-school horror read. It was fast-paced, entertaining, and had a few good jump scare scenes.
