The Sunken Land Begins to Rise Again
The Sunken Land Begins to Rise Again | M. John Harrison
8 posts | 3 read | 13 to read
Shaw had a breakdown, but he's getting himself back together. He has a single room, a job on a decaying London barge, and an on-off affair with a doctor's daughter called Victoria, who claims to have seen her first corpse at age fourteen. It's not ideal, but it's a life. Or it would be if Shaw hadn't got himself involved in a conspiracy theory that, on dark nights by the river, seems less and less theoretical . . . Meanwhile, Victoria is up in the Midlands, renovating her dead mother's house, trying to make new friends. But what, exactly, happened to her mother? Why has the local waitress disappeared into a shallow pool in a field behind the house? And why is the town so obsessed with that old Victorian morality tale, The Water Babies? As Shaw and Victoria struggle to maintain their relationship, the sunken lands are rising up again, unnoticed in the shadows around them.

I don‘t know if I‘ll ever manage to finish this book. I found it so boring and that I was constantly waiting for something to happen when it never did. It‘s very descriptive which can be nice but I did miss an interesting story progression to accompany that. It‘s a fairly short read so I might push through to the end one day but for now it‘s the book I read to help me fall asleep!

Mehso-so

While I enjoyed the writing, the characters, and the settings in this book, it was often hard to tell what was going on. It highlights a lot of modern-day angst (conspiracy theories, elder care responsibilities, economic and political uncertainty), but too much of the action in the book was murky at best.

Pickpick

The two main characters in this year's Goldsmiths Prize winner are Shaw, who appears to be recovering from some kind of existential crisis or breakdown, and Victoria, with whom he has an odd, on-off affair. There is some never-quite-defined conspiracy theory going around which hints at the existence of some weird new fish-like variant of humanity and involves The Water Babies. Very odd but it does contain some wonderful writing.

scripturient I‘m already finished. It was very very weird and I didn‘t really connect with the story. That‘s a shame. It sounded so promising. :) 4y
julesG @scripturient I'm not finished yet, but feel the same about the book. 4y
Maike Just so weird. @scripturient @julesG I also don‘t really feel invested in the story at all, but I‘m wondering if there will be any kind of conclusion or if the story will just stop at some point. 4y

Hello Ladies, do you want to share any thoughts on parts 1+2?

#buddyread with @DuckOfDoom @Maike @scripturient

julesG I have absolutely no idea where this is going. It reminds me of the tagged book, but that was supposed to be a love story. 4y

Starting hour 2 of the day. So far the #JubilantJuly #readathon is going very well. @Andrew65

#buddyread with @DuckOfDoom @Maike and @scripturient - - - Weird book, needs a lot of attention. I noticed myself skimming half a page and boom! missed an as of yet seemingly important detail.

Andrew65 I hate it when that happens. 4y

It's raining, it's pouring...

We are staying in this afternoon, obviously. Originally we wanted to go for an easy hike, but neither of us is willing to get wet down to our unmentionables. 😁

Means I'm forced to drink tea and read. 🥳
