I hate to end my first ever successful #bookspinbingo with a DNF, but here we are. The Libby loan is about to expire and somehow this story is getting more boring just when it ought to be picking up. I‘m all for a slow burn story as long as it has *some* driving force or at least some characters I‘m really invested in. Here at 58%, this seems to have neither. Next!

Pickpick

Dark, magical, character-driven fever dream with a slow burn. Anna-Marie McLemore meets T. Kingfisher. A diverse set of characters & great exploration of grief & teenage coming-of-age, specifically sexual identity. Haunting & vivid atmosphere with deep tension. I like my books odd, dark, & different. This delivered on all three. Creepy, mysterious & occasionally vague in a way that left me thinking. A challenging, but intriguing read.

BookDragonNotWorm I really liked this one, but the ending left my wheels spinning a tad too much. 4y

There is not much I can tell you about this book. A teen boy is moving in with his dad and step mom. They live in a giant rooming house with other random people including a new girl who is about to become his new friend. This is a very gothic story, and the description says it‘s a fantasy, but I didn‘t see any fantasy in the first 2 hours. The only fantasy element was that a boy drowned in the middle of a forest where there was no water.

We Were Restless Things by Cole Nagamatsu is a very unique novel. We Were Restless Things took me a while to get into, but once I got into it I was hooked. There is the mystery of what actually happened, the complicated relationship between the characters and so many revelations. One of the characters is asexual. Thank you NetGalley and Recorded Books.

I‘m far behind on my #goodreads challenge. This week was the first attempt on a book schedule & it worked out really well!

Lately I have been enveloped in multiple POV books. Less than 100 pages into WWRT, it‘s intriguing with a dash of eeriness.

Pickpick

The ‘otherworldly‘ element in this one is hard to explain – it‘s almost like a character in itself, but is mild enough to not deter readers who normally shy away from the genre. The writing is good, at times beautiful, & there was something about the web that Nagamatsu spun that caught me up & wouldn‘t let me go. The lyrical prose lulled me happily along to an ending that left me scratching my head & wondering, but not necessarily in a bad way.

LoverOfLearning Sounds like a very interesting read but the cover is gorgeous! 4y
BookDragonNotWorm @LoverOfLearning That's what made me give it a chance in the first place! 4y
LoverOfLearning @BookDragonNotWorm oooh! You judged a book by its cover!! Haha that's almost exactly what I do with every book I read. 4y
