After reading about male prisoners in 21st century Canada, I chose this to tackle. It's actually a relatively easy read, though the description of torture and forced confession at the start was hard going :(

We had nothing in which to carry water, except our metal mug. Makowski argued that if we waited here a few days we stood a chance of meeting a caravan and securing ourselves a stock of food for the next stage. But I wanted to go. I said that, as we had just missed one caravan, there might not be another for weeks.
What is most important is the deeply felt conviction that freedom is like oxygen, and I hope The Long Walk is a reminder that when lost, freedom is difficult to regain.
pickFrom other reviews there seems to be controversy if this story is true but regardless it's a good read. This is the story of a group of prisoners escaping from a camp in Siberia and their long walk to civilization. I was gripped. I don't know much about the soviet war but this was a good introduction.
pickA sobering and enthralling read, the bonds that are made between the survivors of the camp makes the heart grow and the gruelling hardships that they face make you ever grateful for what you have. 💯💯
I participated in this "chain letter" type thing on FB where you send a book to someone and hopefully get several in return. Well I didn't get any until today. I had never heard of this but it sounds incredibly compelling. It also sounds like it will devastate me so it's right up my alley! ??
