The news hits Mammoth View, California, early on a summer morning: there s been a massacre at one of the campsitesoutside town. It s not clear what happened, but it s obviously bad. And it snot over. As residents panic and head out of town, Police Chief Kenneth Hicksand his deputy set off into the woods to investigate. The campsite attack appears to be theperfect coincidence for Billy Lane. Looking for the biggest score of his careerso he can send his daughter Tori to college, he s targeted the local bank. Butthe robbery does not go well and the aftermath goes even worse. Theunexpected mass panic by the town s residents has jammed up the one highway outof town, forcing Billy to improvise. He heads up Mammoth Mountain, planning totake a treacherous escape route. Worse, he s learned that his daughter, supposedly safe in a summer camp, is missing. Over the next twenty-four hours, chaosdescends on Mammoth View. Billy will have to find deep wells of courage andingenuity to survive. Tori, coming to terms with who her father really is, willdiscover she s much stronger than she ever thought possible. Chief Hicks willface his past personal failures and his present professional ones. All ofwhich leads inexorably to what really happened at the campsite outside of town."

Making friends at my regular pre-work tea and book stop. That's the second time this little guy has dropped by to say hello to me. (Read: steal crumbs from my plate)
In book related news, Mammoth has got off to a pretty good start but other reviews have said this doesn't last. Fingers crossed I have a different experience!

Pickpick

I'm a sucker for multiple characters arcs that all slowly weave together throughout the story.

A solid start and a good ending with occasional moments of brilliance sprinkled throughout, but this didn't quite make up for the rambling jumble of confusing flashbacks in the middle. Some great ideas, but it just didn't do it for me :(

Interesting synopsis but took too long to get anywhere. The characters were hard to keep track of and often spiraled off into a flashback. Despite the back story, found myself not caring and wondering why I'm still reading. From NetGalley.

I don't think anything is more frustrating than a book that starts off well, has a great premise, but then fizzles by the end. The beginning was an earthquake happens, bank robbers get a big robbery, they head off into the mountains, run into a girls camp, with the police unknowingly on their tail. By the end, the police are chasing kidnappers, the girls aren't part of the story, and the robbers are barely talked about. I don't know, almost pan

NerdyRev The writing really saves this book. It is written with an ominous tone that doesn't pan out. 9y

Picked this up on NetGalley and it is an interesting premise-3 bank robbers with their biggest score, a girl left behind at an all girls camp, and two police are stranded in the mountains after a bomb attack happens. I am still in the everybody getting into the mountains part, but great concept and delivery so far.

MrBook Sounds like it. Eager to hear your final verdict! 9y
