The Incredibly Dead Pets of Rex Dexter
The Incredibly Dead Pets of Rex Dexter | Aaron Reynolds
9 posts | 10 read | 9 to read
Rex Dexter is itching to have a dog. He was practically born to have one. His name is Rex, for crying out loud. It's a dog's name. Any pooch is preferable, but a chocolate Labrador is the pinnacle. The best of the best. The dream of all dreams. When Rex's B-Day for Me-Day finally arrives, his parents surprise him with a box. A box with holes. A box with holes and adorable scratchy noises coming from inside. Could it be? Yes! It has to be! A . . . a . . . Chicken? Pet poultry? How clucky. One hour and fourteen minutes later, the chicken is dead (by a steamroller), Rex is cursed (by the Grim Reaper), and wild animals are haunting Rex's room (hounding him for answers). Even his best friend Darvish is not going to believe this, and that kid believes everything. Rex's uninvited ghostly guests are a chatty, messy bunch. And they need Rex to solve their mysterious deadly departures from the Middling Falls Zoo before it happens again. But how? New York Times best-selling author Aaron Reynolds delivers a wickedly funny debut title in The Incredibly Dead Pets of Rex Dexter series.

The final installment in the Rex Dexter Series doesn‘t stray too far from the tried and true formula.

Unfortunately, after three books, it does wear a bit thin. What I think made the second book (Narwhal I‘m Around) an engaging read is the arc of Rex‘s and Darvish‘s friendship on the rocks. Here, there is no character arc at all.

While I really like Rex Dexter, and enjoy Reynolds‘ humor I just wish there had been a bit more substance.

This was a fun middle grade read with some pretty dark humor. Rex isn‘t a great friend, but he‘s a reasonably believable middle school boy. He wants a dog but instead gets a pet chicken that dies a tragic death almost immediately. Then, he‘s haunted by the chicken and some recently deceased zoo animals which leads him to solving the mystery of the zoo animals‘ deaths.

Daisey @jewright Not quite yet, but this is one to recommend for your reader later. 2y
jewright That sounds funny! 2y
Daisey @jewright It was; I actually laughed out loud a few times. The ghost chicken was my favorite. 2y

Rex Dexter is a precocious pre-teen who can still appreciate how hilarious butts are. A whodunit where the who is pretty obvious the moment they hit the page, but that‘s not the point. The book is hilarious and immature and I think Reynolds is just trying to get young readers (particularly boys) to laugh and enjoy reading. With that being said, my daughter enjoyed it (maybe not as much as me, though) and asked to read the second installment.

“Rex Dexter is itching to have a dog. He was practically born to have one. His name is Rex, for crying out loud. It's a dog's name.” On his birthday his parents give him a pet chicken 🐓! who is run over and its ghost starts to haunt Rex; followed soon by other animal spirits! This was hilarious and helped me not think about the things I think too much about 😳

Obnoxious middle-grade boy humor meets its match in a curse by the grim reaper. This was just good, imaginative fun.

I loved this story—it‘s a fantastically fun & funny middle grade mystery from Reynolds which was, in fact, published in April while we were sheltering in place. I hope people find/found this book—it‘s a delightful romp. When Rex Dexter gets a chicken for his birthday instead of the dog he wanted he‘s disappointed. When the chicken dies & starts haunting him he‘s intrigued. When other dead animals show up he realizes there‘s a mystery to solve.

vivastory I have to say if at least one of these dead animals isn't name Church then the author is falling asleep on the job 😂 4y

I needed a light and easy read so I thought I would try this. It was pretty good and in fact a few times I chuckled out loud. I think this would be a fun book for an animal lover in your life.

This was so much fun! I laughed out loud so many times reading this. It reminded me of the Timmy Failure series, Rex is a similar sort of narrator. I think this would be especially fun read aloud. Psyched that this is the first in a series!

This kinda looks like everything I need in a book right now...

BookNAround I‘ll be looking for your review on this one because it sounds whackadoodle but possibly in the best way! 5y
