A biography about Keith Haring's life and artwork. I really liked this book!
“He didn't believe that some people understand art while others don't-- or that art should be hidden away in galleries, museums, and private collections.
Keith wanted to communicate with as many people as possible. 'The public has a right to art... Art is for everybody.'“
“Kieth drew all the time, everywhere. 'But not on the walls!' his mother would call, just as he was getting some big ideas.“'
Students are exposed to the life stories of those who have succeeded despite adversity through biographies. By giving kids positive role models, this can inspire them.
Drawing on Walls: A Life of Keith Haring by Matthew Burgess is a biography. From his early years of admiring art until his death at age 31 from problems related to AIDS, the story chronicles Keith's life. Keith loved to teach kids painting, and he would involve them in the construction of his murals all around the world. He loved the artistic process so much and was always inspired.
“As word spread, people came from all over Europe to meet Keith and watch him work.“
Matthew Burgess's narrative not only focuses on Haring's artistic journey but also delves into his activism. Haring used his art as a platform to address social issues, including AIDS awareness, apartheid, and the fight against drug addiction. This book would would enrich children's knowledge.
“Drawing on Walls: A Life of Keith Haring“ written by Matthew Burgess is a picture book biography that explores the life and art of the influential American artist Keith Haring. The book begins with Keith Haring's childhood and his early fascination with drawing. As he grows up, the narrative unfolds the story of how Haring's passion for art led him to New York City, where he became a prominent figure in the 1980s art scene.
I would definitely use this book with older elementary students due to the complexity and extreme depth of Keith Haring's artistic journey throughout his life. This book could be a great starting point to discuss the importance of using art to tell a story, describe an experience, and show emotions. Furthermore, to visualize what it looks like when you follow your dreams and really make a living doing what you are passionate about and made to do.
This picture book is easily one of the most graphic and colorfully illustrated books I have ever read. Full of intensity, vibrant colors, diverse lines, this book is almost chaotic, which helps describe the journey Keith Haring had in his artistic career. For example, the very think, curvy, and abstract lines represent movement, excitement, and his creativity and chaotic mindset when it came to creating art and representing his passions.
#MayCharacters Day 2: picturebook biographies always have a character who #motivates. #Truth
Review is forthcoming.
“I wrote this book as an expression of gratitude for Keith‘s courage and creativity. Since his art may be even more accessible today than it was during his lifetime — you can see his line dancing across t-shirts, posters, skateboards, and walls — what I hope to offer is a glimpse of Keith as a human being. ⬇️
