Cheese Monkeys: A Novel in Two Semesters
Cheese Monkeys: A Novel in Two Semesters | Chip Kidd
4 posts | 10 read | 4 to read
After 15 years of designing more than 1,500 book jackets at Knopf for such authors as Anne Rice and Michael Chrichton, Kidd has crafted an affecting an entertaining novel set at a state university in the late 1950s that is both slap-happily funny and heartbreakingly sad. The Cheese Monkeys is a college novel that takes place over a tightly written two semesters. The book is set in the late 1950s at State U, where the young narrator, has decided to major in art, much to his parents dismay. It is an autobiographical, coming-of-age novel which tells universally appealing stories of maturity, finding a calling in life, and being inspired by a loving, demanding, and highly eccentric teacher."

Mehso-so

This book… started out very promising and then went sideways. I really enjoyed the majority of the first 200 pages: evocative descriptions of college life, interesting tidbits about art and design, solid teenage irreverence. Some dark, contradictory events unfurl (trigger warnings in comments) and the ending was just sleep deprived, rambling nonsense.
Ah well, my last #roll100 complete for July!

#signedsundays let's do it! I'll make my most unique signed book my initial signature show-off. Graphic designer Chip Kidd's first novel, and an enjoyable one, as I recall. And, of course, you're not going to have a book by a graphic designer without some visual treats, like the hidden messages on the fore-edge.

CherylDeFranceschi Very awesome! This book was fun. 8y
