Half a World Away
Half a World Away: The stunningly heartfelt new novel from the bestselling author of The Man I Think I Know | Mike Gayle
14 posts | 19 read | 13 to read
'His most accomplished and moving novel yet' Lisa Jewell 'Emotionally high-voltage' Metro From the author of The Man I Think I Know *** Strangers living worlds apart. Strangers with nothing in common. But it wasn't always that way... Kerry Hayes is a single mum, living on a tough south London estate. She provides for her son by cleaning houses she could never hope to afford. Taken into care as a child, Kerry cannot ever forget her past. Noah Martineau is a successful barrister with a beautiful wife, daughter and home in fashionable Primrose Hill. Adopted as a child, Noah always looks forward, never back. When Kerry reaches out to the sibling she lost on the day they were torn apart as children, she sets in motion a chain of events that will have life-changing consequences for them both. By turns funny and moving, Half a World Away is a story that will stay with you long after you read its powerfully emotional, heartbreaking final page. *** Readers love Half a World Away! 'These are people who matter, situations one can believe. Most readers will find themselves caring very much. A life-affirming read.' Vine 'It isn't easy, it is heart-wrenching, but, oh, is it worth reading. I can't recommend this book highly enough.' Vine 'How have I not read a Mike Gayle book before? I want to give this book all of the starts in the universe. I cried my eyes out at the end. It is touching, heart-wrenching and thought-provoking.' Netgalley 'This story is raw and beautiful and sad. It puts lots of things into perspective and makes you think about what is important in life. Beautifully written, easy to read and will certainly bring tears to your eyes. A must read.' Netgalley 'This is a beautiful, beautiful book. It's about family, about class, about love, about choices and sacrifice. It's about letting go and learning to hold on. It's optimistic and heartbreaking and funny and emotional. It's the kind of book that will stay with you, long after you finish it. Buy it, read it, love it - and hang on to those tissues, you'll need them.' Netgalley Authors love Half a World Away! 'Mike Gayle has such a talent for delving into hearts, minds and contemporary issues. Half a World Away is supremely poignant, uplifting and heartwarming in equal measure - as well as being a real page-turner.' Sophie Kinsella, author of Surprise Me 'Mike has a prodigious talent for writing completely relatable characters who draw you into their world and tug at your heart strings. Half a World Away is an absolute triumph and a joy to read. Once again Mike tackles complex and thorny issues with a confident and compassionate hand.' Ruth Hogan, author of The Keeper of Lost Things 'Half a World Away is heartbreaking and beautiful, full of poignant moments and characters you fall for from page one. I couldn't put it down.' Oh this book, broke me! I was crying at the end! Two siblings separated when child services takes them away from their mother. Noah was a baby gets adopted, but Kerry who was around 10 goes from home to home. She never forgets her brother and eventually they meet up. This then changes both their lifes again! #books

Dear Jason, I've done a lot of mad things in my life but I definitely think writing a letter without knowing if it'll ever get read has to be one of the maddest.

????? " It's these small moments that make life worth living. The moments you take for granted. The ones you always think will be in plentiful supply. But if this past year has shown me anything, it's the need to cherish each and every moment, whether good or bad, whether joyful or painful, as the precious fleeting gifts that they are"
Such a moving book that made me laugh and cry. An emotional depiction of family connection, love, and loss.

My second Mike Gayle book and much preferred this one. Also the last of my library book pile from March! This was my #bookspin choice, number 16 😊

TheAromaofBooks Glad I'm not the only one with that from-March library book pile! 😂 4y
Helen19 @TheAromaofBooks it was almost a surprise when I heard they actually need to go back at the end of this month! 4y
TheAromaofBooks Right?? So demanding. And also kind of ridiculous for them to assume that I've actually READ the books I've had here for six months! 😅 4y
Helen19 @TheAromaofBooks I know, it‘s not like I‘ve been sat round at home with loads of extra time on my hands recently... 4y

This was nicely written book, perfect for a hot day on the beach, but I feel a bit cheated out. I wish the book would have focused more on the developing bond between the siblings and less on the plot surprise.

By the middle of part 2 it seemed pretty obviously what was going to happen. I still sobbed when it did.

What a great book this is..This is the first book of Mike Gayle‘s that I‘ve read but it definitely won‘t be my last. I really cared about the characters and was in a real dilemma - I wanted to devour the story but also didn‘t want it to end 😬😆

LiteraryinPA The best kind of reader‘s dilemma! 5y

Oh I do love a Mike Gayle book - this was really lovely. Nice to see a book based around family relationships - in this case siblings - instead of reading another romance (although there was a bit of that, but it wasn‘t the main focus). Gayle writes his characters so well - Kerry was so lovely and Noah too. And yes I did have a little cry!! I‘m always ready to read another from Mike!

ValerieAndBooks I‘ve not heard of this author. I‘ll have to check him out! 5y
Laru79 Definitely do, @ValerieAndBooks you‘ll love him! 5y

Brilliant from start to finish. Definitely need your tissues for this one and a free afternoon. A story about family bonds and the need for a sister to find her long lost brother. Really original storyline and characters you will get to know
