Forgot to post this here the other day. It took me a while to get through this audiobook because it was kinda dry. That said, it was interesting as it looked at how health care has changed and that early diagnosis isn‘t always a good thing. That it could lead to being over-diagnosed. I already believed in a lot of what the author said but the info provided just solidified my stance.

The fundamental questions raised by the authors are vital medical ethics and practice concerns. To simplify a complex set of topics, Welch encourages patients and even physicians to think carefully about the cost versus benefit of early detection and treatment. He applies it to various cancers, high cholesterol and blood pressure, DNA testing and more.

Started a new listen today. Right now it feels like a researcher‘s dream, but I also appreciate his practical medical attitude.

#TIL: treating people with mild disease (think hypertension or osteoporosis) nets drug companies a lot of money, but doesn‘t actually create proportionally healthier outcomes (don‘t take my word for it—talk to your doctor)

outlawsaturn Healthcare in general all feels very corrupt. 5y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @outlawsaturn Sure does. So far, this book is more about the way doctors prescribe and why. Less about the corruption. But I just started! 5y
Prairiegirl_reading I can‘t stand listening to some of the ads for drugs and their side effects. For example you could get lymphoma from a drug you are taking for psoriasis. Really? Why is that ok? I think I would be filled with rage if I read that. I‘m pretty sure I‘m already filled with rage! 5y

BarbaraTheBibliophage @Prairiegirl_reading It‘s good to know your limits about certain information. I‘m finding I can‘t listen to this for extended periods, because it is kind of crazy making. But there are a zillion podcast episodes on my list, so I‘ve got balance. 5y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @LeeRHarry Oh yes, that‘s no bueno. 5y
