Shine!
Shine! | Chris Grabenstein, J.J. Grabenstein

"Inspirational, commonsensical, and a whole lot of fun." --James Patterson Everyone deserves to shine in this sparkling new book from the New York Times bestselling author of Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library, Chris Grabenstein, and coauthor J.J. Grabenstein--just right for fans of Word of Mouse and The Fourteenth Goldfish. "Who do you want to be?" asks Mr. Van Deusen. "And not when you grow up. Right here, right now." Shine on! might be the catchphrase of twelve-year-old Piper's hero--astronaut, astronomer, and television host Nellie Dumont Frisse--but Piper knows the truth: some people are born to shine, and she's just not one of them. That fact has never been clearer than now, since her dad's new job has landed them both at Chumley Prep, a posh private school where everyone seems to be the best at something and where Piper definitely doesn't fit in. Bursting with humor, heart, science, possibilities, and big questions, Shine! is a story about finding your place in the universe--a story about figuring out who you are and who you want to be.

My son and I started this months ago. It turned out to be too young for him and he completely predicted the outcome with more than half the story remaining. I agreed we did not need to finish it. Yesterday, when I was waiting for my Midnight Sun delivery, I decided to finish it on my own. Heartwarming, sweet story, with important lessons. Would be perfect for kids in elementary school, even though the characters are in middle school.

An adorable sciencey middle grade school transition and finding yourself in adversity kind of plot

This was an inspiring book about friendship, becoming who you are meant to be, and kindness. The characters were wonderfully written and there was just the right amount of light humor to brighten some of the disappointments dealt to the main character.

Karisa Chris Grabenstein is the nicest author ever too! Our school has had many Skype chats with him, and he's just a lovely person. 5y
Nebklvr @Karisa So nice to hear something positive about an author for a change 5y

My son and I are reading “Shine!” by JJ and Chris Grabenstein. If you go to their site, you will find lots of fun things including JJ reading the first chapter.
