When I Die I'm Going to Heaven 'Cause I Spent My Time in Hell
When I Die I'm Going to Heaven 'Cause I Spent My Time in Hell | Barbara Kautz
3 posts | 2 read | 9 to read
WHEN SHE WAS 18 Barbara Hesselman joined the Army to finance her nursing education. A little more than four years later, and with less than six months of nursing experience, she was assigned to the 24th Evacuation Hospital in South Vietnam. On the neurosurgical intensive care unit where she worked, she and her fellow soldiers fought for the lives of the wounded - and sometimes their sanity - with hard work and silly antics that included a mascot named Mighty Ralph. The rhythms of daily life at the 24th Evac have faded from Barbara's memory. What remains are distinct stories involving the patients, corpsmen, doctors, and nurses. Although the Vietnam Conflict serves as the backdrop for When I Die I'm Going to Heaven 'Cause I Spent My Time in Hell Barbara's stories of heroics, love, loss, despair and even joy are timeless.

A thorough & very readable overview about life as a nurse during the #Vietnam war. It is more like MASH than you‘d think—both funny and tragic. I loved when the nurses subtly defied their boss! Trigger warning for explicit explanations of medical procedures. Many many typos, but I wouldn‘t let that deter you from an excellent overview of her experience. #readingasia2021 A day early for #foodandlit. @Butterfinger @Catsandbooks

Doing some planning tonight. A year ago this was a freebie (the ebook is now $5.99), and now it‘s perfect for next month‘s #foodandlit country #Vietnam. It is well-reviewed on Amazon so I‘m looking forward to it. I‘ve read the chunkster, The Matterhorn, an extremely good book about the war, & watched Ken Burns‘ documentary, so I‘ll have a good grounding about the war. For fiction, I plan to read The Mountains Sing. @Butterfinger @Catsandbooks

Texreader This is the first book I‘ve seen with a perfect 5 stars in LibraryThing. It also will be my first book in 2021 for #readingasia2021 @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB (edited) 4y
