There were some really good parts to this WWII homefront MG novel, and I found myself tearing up several times. The morality of war, the ethics of desertion and abetting a deserter, family life for those left behind, child/spouse abuse - all really good points. But I really disliked the best friend and feel like the families could have been fleshed out more.

Also, for a book set in 1944/45 and published in 1991, what an 80s cover!

Loved this book as a kid, loved it again

Really really interesting read about a young girl whose brother gets sent off in World War II and how the war affects the small town in which she resides.

The title is from the rhyme "step on a crack, break your mothers back", but the girl and her friend change it to "step on a crack, break Hitlers back"

I love Mary Downing Hahn's work. The twist and turns in the book are riveting! I honestly didn't see it coming!
