Set in the South at the height of the Vietnam War, The Unwilling combines crime, suspense and searing glimpses into the human mind and soul in NYT bestselling author John Hart's singular style. Gibby's older brothers have already been to war. One died there. The other came back misunderstood and hard, a decorated killer now freshly released from a three-year stint in prison. Jason won't speak of the war or of his time behind bars, but he wants a relationship with the younger brother he hasn't known for years. Determined to make that connection, he coaxes Gibby into a day at the lake: long hours of sunshine and whisky and older women. But the day turns ugly when the four encounter a prison transfer bus on a stretch of empty road. Beautiful but drunk, one of the women taunts the prisoners, leading to a riot on the bus. The woman finds it funny in the moment, but is savagely murdered soon after. Given his violent history, suspicion turns first to Jason; but when the second woman is kidnapped, the police suspect Gibby, too. Determined to prove Jason innocent, Gibby must avoid the cops and dive deep into his brother's hidden life, a dark world of heroin, guns and outlaw motorcycle gangs. What he discovers there is a truth more bleak than he could have imagined: not just the identity of the killer and the reasons for Tyra's murder, but the forces that shaped his brother in Vietnam, the reason he was framed, and why the most dangerous man alive wants him back in prison. This is crime fiction at its most raw, an exploration of family and the past, of prison and war and the indelible marks they leave.

I loved the story, quite different. For a short book it took me ages to read. I think I've reached an age where I need bigger text.

I found my new favorite author. His books are not for the squeamish! This book follows a family and their heartbreak with their sons and the Vietnam war. It‘s not about the war itself but how war affects everyone. Prison, murder and two remaining sons who want to have a family connection once again. Heartbreaking and scary done so well together.

Okay, my #BookSpinBingo board is officially looking better! I‘ve completed two bingo lines already, and am just starting the tagged book. I don‘t know if I‘m just in a really generous book rating mood this month, or if these books will hold up… but I‘ve given a lot of 4 and 5 star rating this month. I finished 33 Women this morning and it was so twisted, but so good! #NovelNovember

I have always wanted to read John Hart, because I have heard great things about his writing. I got The Unwilling through NetGalley, and I was not disappointed.
This story of brotherly love is great for anyone looking for a little action and gore and a few tender moments.
If you like C.J. Box you will like John Hart.

I absolutely loved this book. I finished it within two days and was hooked on to every word. I like that this story had the background of the Vietnam war. It provided a backstory that drove a lot of the tension within the story, but it‘s mainly about the person Jason has become after and the people he has got himself entangled with because of the path he had chosen.

Wowza! I won this last year in a #BookishFirst raffle but thanks to COVID, the publication date was pushed 8 months! I‘ve been a fan of the author‘s for 12 years & this is one of his best! Set in 1972 in Charlotte, the book follows the French family men- the shadow of the oldest son‘s death in Vietnam & the return of his twin brother, Jason & the reunion with youngest son, Gibson. As much plot-driven as character, it feels epic and thrilling!

AmyG This sounds good! Stacked. How are you Torie? 4y
TorieStorieS @AmyG It‘s great! I am good- but things have just been crazy! We are in the midst of moving!! A house in our favorite neighborhood went up for sale over the holidays so we have been super excited and focused on that! I have a huge stack of stuff to get to the post office though!! (edited) 4y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ It‘s about the black sheep. Brothers. Parents. It‘s about how those roles can be the biggest assets and the largest curses. And there‘s a murder. John Hart is a favorite time and time again. Fan-girl swoon! Full review at ScrappyMags.com! @StMartinsPress

Erinreadsthebooks I like John Hart, too! Excited to see good reviews for this one! 4y
ScrappyMags @Erinreadsthebooks his books are always so different... there‘s a murder and a mystery and all that but it‘s really about this fractured family. He does that so well! 4y

Great mystery/thriller that takes place in North Carolina during this time of the Vietnam War. There are three brothers in the French family; one died in the war, one's spirit died in the war and comes back with addiction issues, and the third is in high school. My only criticism/ warning to readers is that parts of it are graphic. I often listen to audiobook while cooking and eating which I don't recommend with this particular story.

This book exceeded my expectations. Gibby, a high school senior, gets a chance to reconnect with his brother who has been in prison. Both have demons to get rid of, but Jason is also dealing with the trauma of serving three tours in the Vietnam war. What starts as a fun day, turns into a nightmare. I recommend this book to people who like crime dramas.

I received a free ARC from BookishFirst and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Set in the south during the Vietnam War. Robert French was killed in the war. His brother, Jason, home after 3 tours and wants to spend some time with his brother, Gibby. Det. Bill French and his wife, Gabrielle, want Jason to stay away from Gibby as Jason is a hardened soldier of violence and heroin. Page turner, excellent writing, satisfying ending. Recommended June 2020
