Despite reading part 3 of this saga out of turn with the feeling that I had skipped an entire generation of the privileged and elite Garland family, I kept pace. Though the Wesley clan is this title's focus, the influence of deceased Patriarch, Oliver Garland, is still revered. Part 2 is on my TBR.

Pickpick

As Edward Trotter Wesley Jr, son of an esteemed clergyman, searches globally for his sister, Junie, a romantic backstory builds. Eddie is polished yet tough. His designs on Aurie are not eclipsed by his 17-year search. A complex saga of Harlem's Black elite on the cusp of the Civil Rights era.

MrBook Great pic! 8y
Donna_sBookMinute Thank you @mrbook -- I enjoy composing my @Litsy post shots. You have some really awesome ones as well. 8y

Glad I supplemented this read with audio. The reader slips from narration to voices seamlessly. Impeccable intonation and cadence. In addition to mastering both "educated" and urban dialects, his impressions of known figures like Nixon, JFK are undeniable. West Indian, Asian, boardroom to 'hood.

MrBook You talked me into it. 8y
BookishFeminist You've sold me, too. Thanks for the rec. 8y
Donna_sBookMinute @MrBook and @BookishFeminist -- I think you'll enjoy this political suspense novel. Let me know. And this review is of the audio only. I'll post my print review later this evening. 8y

I'm on the home stretch. Can't wait to finish tonight. You can't figure this guy out. There've been some amazing twists. Despite them, I'm holding on to one observation.

" 'You're gonna tell me,' he said. The second man from the car approached. Eddie made a fist. ... At that moment Eddie would happily have told the gangster anything to stop that nail from going in--anything except the secret that might lead to his sister."

FIRST MENTION OF TITLE: Pg 73
"35--Term 2--Palace Council to reconsider timing. ... Aurelia shook her head. Who or what was the Palace Council?" I'm with "Aurie." I don't think Palace Council is a what -- but a who. It's a code name. The dead guy's initials are PC.

AUDIOBOOK QUESTION
This book is not playing in correct order. I did notice that the chapters downloaded randomly -- not in successive order. Wonder if it's playing in the order the content was downloaded. Anybody have suggestions? Thanks. 📲

BookishFeminist I'm not sure whether this would fix anything as I'm not that great w/technology, but gave you tried redownloading the chapter files separately? Is that possible? I hope you can sort it out! 8y
Donna_sBookMinute @BookishFeminist -- I thought about doing that; but wanted to see if anyone else had experienced the problem before doing so. If we both came up with that solution, it's probably the right one. I also didn't want to tax my data plan unnecessarily. I'll wait 'til I'm at B&N or HPB later. Thanks. 8y
BookishFeminist No problem; I hope it works! I wouldn't want to tax my data plan either. So odd it downloaded like that. 8y

Some of the bourgeoisie characters of "...Ocean Park" return. "Palace Council" is on my shelf; and I saw it on Overdrive. So I got the audiobook; and will alternate. The uppercrust Garland family is connected. So far, cameos include Harry Belafonte, Bob Hope, Lena Horne, and Langston Hughes.

Pelican71 I read The Emperor of Ocean Park years ago. Would you recommend giving it a second reading before Palace Council? @Donna_sBookMinute 8y
Donna_sBookMinute Not necessarily, @Pelican71 -- although it's totally up to you. It's been years since I read EoOP too. Before I reread anything, I'd like to finish the rest of the collection. And there's also "Back Channel" which I haven't acquired yet. 8y
Pelican71 Thanks @Donna_sBookMinute. I see that it's a part of the Elm Harbor series. If anything I should read New England White before Palace Council. 8y
