This book was written in the 1980s and it should stay there. It is a tawdry, bloated, over-the-top historical novel set during the French Revolution. The plot and the characters are just ridiculous. Bad characters are not just bad, they are super ugly and disgusting. Good characters are not just good, but gorgeous. There is also brutalization of women that seems to just be for shock value. And the ending was incredibly contrived and silly. Fail!

Really enjoyed the first one in this series, but this one didn‘t feel of the same quality, and I really struggled to get into it. I do wonder if it was me and my concentration levels following COvID.
Perhaps will give it another go in the future when my concentration levels are better as I loved the first one and on Goodreads this has a higher rating.

Second book finished for #outstandingoctober Readathon

The second book I am targeting for the #OutstandingOctober Readathon is Fallen Angels, which I am 45% through. A historical fiction day, first Roman times, now Revolutionary France.

A big gap since I read the first one in this series, but listening to Fallen Angels. If it‘s anything like a crowning Mercy it will be excellent.
