Life Is Not an Accident
Life Is Not an Accident: A Memoir of Reinvention | Jay Williams
2 posts | 5 read | 1 to read
This big-hearted memoir by the most promising professional basketball player of his generation details his rise to NBA stardom, the terrible accident that ended his career and plunged him into a life-altering depression, and how he ultimately found his way out of the darkness. Ten years ago, Jay Williams was at the beginning of a brilliant professional basketball career. The Chicago Bulls top draft pickand the second pick of the entire drafthe had the great Michael Jordans locker. Then he ran his high-performance motorcycle head-on into a light pole, severely damaging himself and ending his career. In this intense, hard-hitting, and deeply profound memoir, Williams talks about the accident that transformed him. Sometimes, the memories are so fresh, he feels like hell never escape the past. Most days, he finds a quiet peace as a commentator on ESPN and as an entrepreneur who can only look back in astonishment at his younger selfa kid who had it all, thought he was invincible, and lost everything . . . only to gain new wisdom. Williams also shares behind the scenes details of life as an All-American. He tells it straight about the scandalous recruiting process and his decision to return to Duke and Coach Ka man who taught him about accountabilityto finish his education. He also speaks out about corruptionamong coaches, administrators, players, and alumniand about his time in the NBA, introducing us to a dark underworld culture in the pros: the gambling, drugs, and sex in every city, with players on every team.

He said, "Jason, I want you to take all this information and process it. Once you leave this room, I want you to truly think about what it means to be different. I don't want you to follow the norm. I want you to blaze your own path. I want you to be a pioneer." Page 102

So if I'm going to read a book a book about sports, it's going to be about Duke basketball. Yes, there are a lot of haters of my undergraduate alma mater, but please be kind Litsy! The Blue Divide just came to my library, so it's in the TBR. Jay Williams, my contemporary at Duke, wrote an amazing book about coming back from massive motorcycle injuries. Onceuponatime We are huge Duke fans here! Adding this to my list 8y
ImaginativeMom Jay's book was so honest. I loved it. I grew up in a divided Duke/UNC house and then I betrayed them all and went to UVA. 😂😂😂 I just root for everyone until they play each other! Then it gets complicated. 8y
Megabooks @Onceuponatime Great! It's really good! @ImaginativeMom I grew up in a UK house, so my family really hated it when I chose Duke!! 8y
Merethebookgal My family's all Duke fans and my older sister went there for her undergrad as well! She'd even live in a tent for a while each year with friends to score the best basketball tickets 😄 I am not much of a sports watcher myself, but the Duke bball games were always exiting! 8y
Megabooks @Merethebookgal I only tented once, but my roommate was always among the first five tents! 8y
