The Laundry Files fast-paced blend of espionage thrills, mundane office comedy and Lovecraftian horror (SFX) continues as Hugo Award-winning author Charles Stross assigns a day trader to a permanent position on the night shift... After stumbling upon the algorithm that turned him and his fellow merchant bankers into vampires, Alex Schwartz was drafted by The Laundry, Britains secret counter-occult agency thats humanitys first line of defense against the forces of darkness. Dependent on his new employers for his continued existenceas Alex has no stomach for predatory bloodsuckinghe has little choice but to accept his new role as an operative-in-training. Dispatched to Leeds, Alexs first assignment is to help assess the costs of renovating a 1950s Cold War bunker into The Laundrys new headquarters. Unfortunately, Leeds is Alexs hometown, and the thought of breaking the news to his parents that hes left banking for civil service, while hiding his undead condition, is causing more anxiety than learning how to live as a vampire secret agent preparing to confront multiple apocalypses. Alexs only saving grace is Cassie Brewer, a drama student appearing in the local Goth Festival who is inexplicably attracted to him despite his awkward personality and massive amounts of sunblock. But Cassie has secrets of her ownsecrets that make Alexs night life behaviors seem positively normal...

Still no Bob this time 😢. Although Alex, a young, awkward vampire mage, and his terrifyingly eldritch Elven princess who came to Earth to enslave humanity are a nice palette cleanser. More humorous than the last one, although droves of people die, and we‘re clearly still snowballing towards the end of the world.

And, oh boy, there go the tentacled, carnivorous unicorns again…

Great, even if the POV was unexpected.

4.0/5

queerbookreader You know those wire locker shelves? I use one of those to keep some of my books off the floor. It only raises them up like a foot but at least they aren't on the ground 8y

I'm not entirely happy with the characters, and the narrative could definitely be improved, but the plot kind of makes up for those shortcomings. At any rate, I'm glad to leave this behind and get on to the next book, where hopefully a better character and better narrative will be waiting for me. Full review here: http://wp.me/p21txV-ug

The US was a colonial power too. Image: School begins (1899) by Louis Dalrymple. Appeared as a centerfold in Puck, v. 44, no. 1142, on January 25, 1899. Mayread I keep sending your quotes from this book to a friend who works in TV. They all work perfectly for that industry. 😏 8y
kammartinez @Skiles I hope they get a laugh out of them then XD. To be fair, Charles Stross is an author who's VERY in-touch with pop culture, and this whole series is grounded on that (plus other aspects of geekery like comics and movies and computers). I bet your friend would enjoy the series as well :). 8y

What better way to start the latest book in one of my favorite eldritch urban fantasy series than by nibbling on some Japanese-style cheese tarts? They won't keep the Dead Gods away, but at least if I die, I'll die happy and full ;D.
