Movies (And Other Things)
Movies (And Other Things) | Shea Serrano
11 posts | 8 read | 9 to read
#1 New York Times bestselling author Shea Serrano is back, and his new book, Movies (And Other Things), combines the fury of a John Wick shootout, the sly brilliance of Regina George holding court at a cafeteria table, and the sheer power of a Denzel monologue, all into one. Movies (And Other Things) is a book about, quite frankly, movies (and other things). One of the chapters, for example, answers which race Kevin Costner was able to white savior the best, because did you know that he white saviors Mexicans in McFarland, USA, and white saviors Native Americans in Dances with Wolves, and white saviors Black people in Black or White, and white saviors the Cleveland Browns in Draft Day? Another of the chapters, for a second example, answers what other high school movie characters would be in Regina George's circle of friends if we opened up the Mean Girls universe to include other movies (Johnny Lawrence is temporarily in, Claire from The Breakfast Club is in, Ferris Bueller is out, Isis from Bring It On is out...). Another of the chapters, for a third example, creates a special version of the Academy Awards specifically for rom-coms, the most underrated movie genre of all. And another of the chapters, for a final example, is actually a triple chapter that serves as an NBA-style draft of the very best and most memorable moments in gangster movies. Many, many things happen in Movies (And Other Things), some of which funny, others of which are sad, a few of which are insightful, and all of which are handled with the type of care and dedication to the smallest details and pockets of pop culture that only a book by Shea Serrano can provide.

Boy, did that gut my previous score! All the way down to 43/100.

Let's do 3 favorite movies from the list:

1. Casablanca
2. Wizard of Oz
3. Do the Right Thing

My last read of September was my August #bookspin (just a month late -- oops!). It was really fun and definitely worth checking out if you're into movies and/or pop culture. A love for action flicks and mobster movies will not hurt!

I‘ve watched Scrubs over & over again. Recently the Fake Doctors Real Friends podcast reminded me of why I loved it so much. It managed to swing from humor to emotional depth w/such smooth transitions. This short book (not on Litsy but by this author), delves into why it was so great. My fav essays were:

My Heartache: Ben‘s arch on the show.

My Friend Talks to a Ghost: Why Carla was so amazing.

My Hindsight: Most meaningful moments in the show.

Scochrane26 I‘ve been listening to the podcast & have rewatched most of scrubs this month. I‘m interested in reading Serrano‘s essays, too. 3y
AvidReader25 @Scochrane26 Since you‘ve listened to the podcast you definitely know his sense of humor. You‘ll have to check out the essays! 3y

I have zero interest in basketball, yet I found his first book to be very enjoyable. Movies are much more subjective on many levels, yet, even when I disagreed with his arguments, his writing is so personable and compelling, I couldn't stop reading. It also makes me want to go back and watch a whole bunch of movies I've seen before, and have me some good recommendations.

vivastory This is coming in the mail tomorrow. Really looking forward to it! 5y

True story: Thanks to this book, my sister and I got into a screaming match about WHICH Nicholas Cage character we would want to add to our fantasy heist crew. We both knew Nicholas Cage had to be involved, but she was going for Face/Off Cage, whereas I was going for I‘m-gonna-steal-the-Declaration-of-Independence Cage and then my mother chimed in late in the game to advocate for Moonstruck Nicholas Cage which started this whole fight over again.

Tianarose I love Nicholas Cage. But I‘m surprised gone in 60 seconds Cage was not in this particular debate! (edited) 5y
Expandingbookshelf @Tianarose My brother in law heard about this discussion a few days later and IMMEDIATELY texted me to demand the inclusion of 60 seconds Cage! 5y
Tianarose @Expandingbookshelf lol. That‘s hilarious. There‘s lots of good options to choose from his characters 5y

I love listening to Shea Serrano talk about movies. I‘m hoping he‘ll have a season 2 of his Villains podcast.

I just got this book in the mail today. I‘m really excited to dig into it and start a ‘movies to watch‘ list! I‘m also loving the illustrations. 😍

This might be the go-to present for my movie-loving friends and family members.

“This is the thing where an NBA Player sits at a table on a stage in front of a room full of sports reporters after a big game and answers questions, except it‘s not an NBA player, it‘s Michael Myers. And it‘s not after a big game, it‘s after a night of killing.” 😂 This book was brilliant. #24B4Monday @TheReadingMermaid @jb72 @Andrew65 #TeamSlaughter

Seen this book at the library and simply HAD to bring it home with me. Hopefully there will be some good bits about some of the scary movies I hope to watch this month. Although - the section I read about The Rock playing Rose in Titanic has already made it worth it! 😂😂😂#TeamSlaughter
