My Beloved Brontosaurus
My Beloved Brontosaurus: On the Road with Old Bones, New Science, and Our Favorite Dinosaurs | Brian Switek
One of Amazon's Best Science Books of 2013 A Hudson Booksellers Staff Pick for the Best Books of 2013 One of Publishers Weekly's Top Ten Spring Science Books Selected by Apple's iBookstore as one of the best books of April A Bookshop Santa Cruz Staff Pick Dinosaurs, with their awe-inspiring size, terrifying claws and teeth, and otherworldly abilities, occupy a sacred place in our childhoods. They loom over museum halls, thunder through movies, and are a fundamental part of our collective imagination. In My Beloved Brontosaurus, the dinosaur fanatic Brian Switek enriches the childlike sense of wonder these amazing creatures instill in us. Investigating the latest discoveries in paleontology, he breathes new life into old bones. Switek reunites us with these mysterious creatures as he visits desolate excavation sites and hallowed museum vaults, exploring everything from the sex life of Apatosaurus and T. rex's feather-laden body to just why dinosaurs vanished. (And of course, on his journey, he celebrates the book's titular hero, "Brontosaurus"who suffered a second extinction when we learned he never existed at allas a symbol of scientific progress.) With infectious enthusiasm, Switek questions what we've long held to be true about these beasts, weaving in stories from his obsession with dinosaurs, which started when he was just knee-high to a Stegosaurus. Endearing, surprising, and essential to our understanding of our own evolution and our place on Earth, My Beloved Brontosaurus is a book that dinosaur fans and anyone interested in scientific progress will cherish for years to come.

I'm having this tiny problem with my reading at the moment. I have SO much to read, but the only books I WANT to read are the ones I haven't actually got. Aka the ones I will order when my Big Bad Book Buying Ban ends. Eh.

I think I'll reread My Beloved Brontosaurus while waiting The Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs. And usually you can never go wrong with Hardinge either.

Wow! What a terrific update on paleontology! This is such an accessible book, chock-full of awesome facts and plenty of pop culture references. Dino sex, feathers (so many feathers!), what dinos sounded like, their coloring, the Pluto-like dismissal of the brontosaurus...this gives you a hint at the detective work that goes into studying fossils. I think I chose the wrong line of work... Recommended on audio if you can get it! 🐊🐦💖💖

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Is that photo from Baby, Secret of a Lost Legend? 8y

Oh, Littens. I cannot wait to dig into my reading this month. I have a whole bunch of book books, comics, and audiobooks lined up once I move (starting tomorrow!) and a new apartment that may just be my booklover's dream. #TBR subject to change of course, and I need to get through The Long Way and maybe reread Binti, but a girl can dream. I have an overall goal of reading at least 6 books off my GR TBR. #FeistyFeb

Cinfhen Good luck with your move 💜 8y

From @gibblr and @WanderingBookaneer's prompt, here's my #bookishhoroscope for 2017. Pick the book nearest to you and go to page 117, second sentence.

"Allosaurus was not the milder percursor of prehistory's most famous tyrant, but an agile predator of frightening size and aspect." OMINOUS INDEED. ????

gibblr Better watch your back for dinosaurs this year 😂 8y
I-read-and-eat I would avoid any museum with dinosaurs if I wereyou 8y
