Is it just me or was Roxy obnoxious and not in a clever fun way? This book took way longer than it should to read. I kept putting it down…reading something else. Let‘s face it if I wanted to read Bridget Jones, I would pick up a Bridget Jones book. Not quite a pan but not a strong so-so either.
Episode 75 (!!) of the Brit Lit Podcast features a delightful conversation with Mary Pauline Lowry.
We talked UK/US cultural differences, the joys of epistolary novels, and a whole lot more. Have a listen!

Escapist chick lit for the win. An interesting read that takes place in Austin, TX during 6 months in the life of a wayward young lady a la Bridget Jones.

I so wanted to like this book. I spent too much time on it, hoping it would get better. I just can't anymore. It's juvenile, shallow, unrealistic, and exceedingly unlikeable.
Rating: ⭐️
Very cringe worthy and petty. Roxy writes letters to her ex boyfriend who is now living with her. I found it to be super juvenile and that the author tried too hard to make Roxy seem super flawed. Didn‘t feel realistic and hard to connect with Roxy.

It's filled with magical little moments pushing against the linguist patriarchy in an endearingly hippy-dippy way. Roxy is a mess. She's committed to not getting back together with her ex, who moved in. She's less committed to her vegan diet. She is struggling to get laid and pay her mortgage. She's in an artistic slump when a new friend enters her world, shaking things up. https://onthebl.org/2020/04/03/the-roxy-letters-by-mary-pauline-lowry/
I loved this book so much more than I probably should have. The main draw on this for me, this is quintessentially Austin, Tx, which happens to be where I live. The author has captured our city perfectly in this epistolary novel.

Thank you NetGally and Simon & Schuster for an Advanced Reader‘s Copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I had to bail on this cringe-worthy story.
Why the hell is Roxy writing long letters to her ex describing every single detail of her day when he's never around & clearly using her for a place to stay?
The author tries way too hard to make her a flawed relatable character but Roxy is just a hot mess.
