I wasn‘t sure exactly what this book was about when I first saw it but I‘m so glad I read it. The main character time travels into the past of her descendants, straight into the hell of internment camps forced on Japanese Americans. The story jumps back and forth from the past and into the present, when white supremacist Trump is in the Oval Office. It has very Kindred and The Devil‘s Arithmetic vibes. Excellent and voter story telling. We⬇️

JenniferEgnor need books like this now, more than ever—as history is literally being erased and becoming illegal to talk and think about, by the day. No executive order or law will ever erase it, not while we have our memories. 20h
dabbe Have you ever read FAREWELL TO MANZANAR? It's on my district's literature list, and I used to teach it. The author was a child when she and her family were forced to live at the Manzanar Internment Camp, and the memoir describes her experiences before, during, and after this horrific period. We do need books like these more than ever. #readingispolitical #resist ♥️👊🏻💙 20h
JenniferEgnor @dabbe I have not. Just added it! 11h

Such a good graphic novel. I knew next to nothing about the world war 2 Japanese internment camps. This graphic novel was so informative and heartfelt. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I really enjoyed the unique time travel and education on the incarceration camp experience of Japanese-Americans in the early 1940s. It‘s such a devastating topic.

Kiku travels back in time to the Japanese-American camps in WWII where her grandmother was incarcerated because of her ethnicity. Many messages are conveyed in a beautiful simple manner; for example, it is a historical & genealogical adventure and a protest book against discriminatory immigration policies. A fast 5-star read. Highly recommended for most ages. #Japan #readingasia2021 @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB

BarbaraBB Thank you. Another graphic novel that has me intrigued! 4y

Kiku asked her roommate in the camps if she‘d teach her Japanese. The response: “There‘s no reason for you to learn it. You certainly don‘t want to go to Japan — it‘s even more fascist than America.” #Japan #readingasia2021 @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB

Daughter bought this graphic novel this weekend. She‘s loaned it to me to read for #readingasia2021 for #Japan because it is written by Japanese-American Kiku Hughes. @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB

Librarybelle This looks like it may be a powerful read 4y
Texreader @Librarybelle My daughter really liked it. She follows the author/artist. She tried to figure out how to fit it into my reading schedule when she remembered I could read it for Japan. Smart thinking on her part because fitting something into my reading schedule is tough. 😉 4y
